AACG SMRC tour
Merry Koschan, left, talks with an AACG Southeast meeting attendee during a tour of the SMRC.

Local section of AACG established

Due to the work done at UT, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and several local companies, East Tennessee is one of the most active areas in the nation for crystal growth. With that in mind, a southeastern section of the American Association for Crystal Growth was recently established, with strong ties to the UT College of Engineering. The new section was initiated by Merry Koschan, research associate with the Scintillation Materials Research Center (SMRC).

The section's first meeting was held at the UT University Center, and also included a laboratory tour of the SMRC. Attendees included UT faculty, students, and staff as well as researchers from ORNL and local industry. The meeting was sponsored by the UT Office of Research via funding for the Tennessee Crystal Synthesis Initiative Organized Research Unit, co-directed by Dr. David Mandrus and Dr. Veerle Keppens, both of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Membership is open to anyone with a professional interest in crystal growth. Read more about the inaugural AACG Southeast meeting >>

Collaboration of UT, ORNL, and Sandia researchers published in Science

The January 10, 2014, issue of the journal Science features a report on a promising collaboration by researchers from the UT College of Engineering, the Center for Nanophase Materials Science (CNMS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and Sandia National Laboratory.

The paper, titled “Heteroepitaxial Growth of Two-Dimensional Hexagonal Boron Nitride Templated by Graphene Edges,” details a new technique for forming a two-dimensional, single-atom sheet of two different materials with a seamless boundary.

A UT team, led by Dr. Gong Gu, an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; Dr. Lei Liu, a post-doctoral researcher; and Wan Deng, a graduate research assistant, co-authored the paper with ORNL’s Jewook Park, Kendal Clark, Juan Carlos Idrobo, Leonardo Basile and An-Ping Li; and Sandia’s David Siegel and Kevin McCarty.

Melcher named IEEE Fellow

Dr. Chuck Melcher, director of the Scintillation Materials Research Center (SMRC), was recently named a Fellow of the IEEE.

Each year, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a select group of recipients for one of the Association’s most prestigious honors, elevation to IEEE Fellow.  Less than 0.1% of voting members are selected annually for this member grade elevation. The announcement of his fellowship cited his discovery of a cerium-activated lutetium oxy-orthosilicate scintillator and its application to medical imaging.

Featured student: Carter McVeigh

Carter McVeigh

Our student this week is Carter Glenn McVeigh, above, a mechanical engineering major who accepted a co-op at ExxonMobil, located in Baytown, Texas. McVeigh describes the department he worked in and what his main responsibilities were.

"I worked with the pipelines team in the MCIS (Materials Corrosion Inspection and Structures) group," he said. "My project was to analyze and correlate various pipeline inspection data sets in order to create a mitigation and repair plan for several South Texas production pipelines. This required knowledge of corrosion, cathodic protection, pipeline coatings, inline inspections (smart-pigging), as well as advanced competency in Excel. As a secondary project, I worked with the data management team on the implementation of a new GIS mapping software. My role was to visually optimize overlaid inspection data for easy viewing. I also supported other assets through analysis of close internal potential surveys."

The challenges gave McVeigh the valuable benefits during his co-op assignment.

"For someone who is quite comfortable in an academic setting, I can say the most valuable benefit I received as a co-op was being truly challenged," said McVeigh. "My questions could not be answered with a raise of the hand. Keeping an open dialogue with one's mentors is critical, as this will offer inspiration and guidance, but nobody has the answer key. Real problems don’t come pre-solved; that’s what engineers are for."

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work–In Their Own Words.” For information on engineering co-op and internships, contact [log in to unmask] or 865-974-5323.

Save the Date: Spring 2014 Recruiting Events

Spring Job & Internship Fair
2:00–6:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 4, Thompson-Boling Arena

For a list of employers, check your HIRE-A-VOL account.

Students attending the Spring Job & Internship Fair, this year, need to pre-register for this event. Once again the University of Tennessee has partnered with Recpass for our Spring Job & Internship Fair. RecPass technology creates an electronic format of your resume to share with employers at the career fair. Similar to last falls career fair many employers require students to have a RecPass to be considered for employment.

  • Sign up for RecPass and register for the career fair at
    https://recpass.com/university-of-tennessee
  • Upload your résumé and complete the rest of your profile that you would like to be visible to the employers prior to the fair

AT THE FAIR:

  • You will receive your pre-printed name badge with your RecPass QR Code. This badge will enable employers to scan your QR code and immediately access your school information, personal contact information, and résumé electronically
  • If you already have a RecPass badge from a past career fair you do not need a new one, as your original RecPass will still work. Make sure to keep your profile and resume updated.

NOTE: If you choose to wait and register onsite, you will need to bring an electronic copy of your resume to upload to the RecPass registration site. Otherwise, your resume may not be viewable to employers and your entry into the event may be delayed!

RECPASS BENEFITS FOR YOU:

  • Provides quick and easy data sharing of contact information and résumé with target employers
  • Saves paper, time and money
  • Ensures data and discussion notes are captured enabling faster follow up by employers and preventing lost applications
  • Reduces or eliminates the need to “apply online,” as employers can now upload your documents and resume directly
  • Reduces data entry time providing more time for more valuable discussion with employers

We look forward to having you participate in the upcoming Spring Job & Internship Fair at the University of Tennessee.
