Greene comments on NFL's green efforts

Dr. David Greene, a research professor with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering<http://cee.utk.edu/>, was quoted in an NBC News article this week in regards to this weekend's Superbowl. He did not offer an opinion on the game's likely outcome, but rather a comment on the desire of the National Football League (NFL) to improve the environmental impact of the championship event. Greene worked with Jack Groh, director of the league's environmental program, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to help reduce the Superbowl's carbon footprint.

CEE grad students make strong showing at conference

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering<http://cee.utk.edu/> graduate students Jonathan Weigand and Geoffrey Goodmiller were selected as two of the five finalists in the Structures Student Paper Competition at the fifty-fifth AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference held from January 13-17, 2014, in National Harbor, Maryland.

They competed in an international field consisting of thirteen student papers, and these written papers were judged by a panel of national experts in structural engineering. Weigand’s paper was titled "Sensitivity Analysis of Out-of-Plane Composite Lamina Properties Relative to Configuration and Constitutive Properties." and Goodmiller’s paper was titled "Investigation of Composite Patch Performance Under Impact Loading." As finalists, they presented their research to five judges from aerospace companies, including Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. Although not selected for an award, both presentations received many positive comments from the judges regarding the quality of their research.

Both students received their Master’s degrees this December as part of Dr. Stephanie TerMaath’s Computational Structural Mechanics Research Group. Their papers were based on their thesis research.

NE students selected by DOE for fellowships

Students Anagha Iyengar and Cole Lillard, from the Department of Nuclear Engineering<http://www.engr.utk.edu/nuclear/>, have been competitively selected by the Department of Energy (DOE) to be 2014-2015 National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Graduate Program Fellows.

This twelve-month, full-time, salaried fellowship program provides participants with specialized training and practical experience on projects and initiatives that contribute to a safer world. In addition to gaining valuable experience working with federal government programs, participants have opportunities to collaborate with DOE, as well as other government agencies, national laboratories, and non-governmental organizations.

Iyengar completed her MS degree in nuclear engineering in December 2013, and she is now pursuing her doctorate. Lillard completed his MS degree a year earlier and has been working at Pantex. This is the second year that two nuclear engineering students from UT have been selected for this very competitive program. All of these graduate students have been advised by either Dr. Jason Hayward or Dr. Howard Hall in nuclear engineering.

Featured student: Michael Pennington

[Michael Pennington]Our student this week is Michael Slater Pennington, a biomedical engineering major who accepted a co-op at Fiberweb–Old Hickory, located in Old Hickory, Tennessee.

Michael describes the department he worked in and what his main responsibilities were.

"I worked in the quality lab," said Pennington. "I was responsible for running Gage R&R's on the lab equipment and making changes to increase resolution of the device and decrease variation. I also worked to check into standards and compare the different methods found in ASTM, INDA, ISO, and DIN."

Pennington made valuable connections during his co-op assignment.

"Working with a great company with great people, and having access to software that I have learned to use, will come in handy down the road," said Pennington. "Also, running the Gage R&R has helped me to understand more statistics."

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu<http://www.coop.utk.edu>, clicking "Resource Library" (on the left margin) and selecting "Students at Work–In Their Own Words."
