The City of Norfolk Public Library is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Librarian I. The position will conduct collection development for Slover Main Library, is responsible to select library materials, staff training on reader' advisory services, and develops long-rage plans for various programs. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  *   Analyzes circulation habits of readers.
  *   Responsible for the selection of library materials for Slover Main Library using professional library tools and resources.
  *   Develops processes and generates weeding reports.
  *   Develops and conducts staff training on readers' advisory services for materials in collaboration with the Electronic Content Librarian, integrating technology into the process of connecting readers with books.
  *   Selects the books and materials for Slover's Main Library newly-purchased Opening Day Collection (ODC).
  *   Oversees the moving of 45,000 books and materials from Storage to Slover Main Library, and integrates the new collection (ODC).
  *   Supervises one library associate.
  *   Requires to be knowledgeable on developments in the international publishing industry and readers' demands.
  *   Managerial responsibilities include developing long-range plans for various programs, creating training programs, interviewing and recommending for hire support staff, and establishing workload priorities.
  *   Conducts research for documents, compiles data for computer entry, and/or enters or oversees data entry; may recommend purchase of materials and equipment.
  *   Performs related duties as required.

Education/Experience:


  *   Work requires professional level of knowledge of a discipline which is acquired in a Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university.
  *   Two years of progressively responsible experience as a professional Librarian including supervisory experience.
  *   Experience as a team player with a commitment to excellence and innovation in public library service.

  *   State of Virginia Professional Librarian Certification preferred.

Additional Information & Requirements:

State of Virginia Professional Librarian Certification within six months of employment.

Valid Driver's license.
