Know anyone who'd be a great librarian? Looking to retool or refresh your
own skill set? Interested in learning more about current topics in library
and information science?

Dominican University GSLIS is offering *new opportunities* to take
graduate-level courses for credit current MLIS holders and those in any
related field who wish to increase their knowledge of current topics in
LIS. This opportunity is also available for those with a bachelor's degree
interested in sampling the LIS field, so please share this opportunity with
anyone you think might be interested.

Registration is open now for student-at-large status in several spring 2014
courses (the spring semester begins 1/8/14) that focus on youth services,
technology, and other topics without applying to the university:

   - *LIS 703 Organization of Knowledge*, Dr. Karen Snow (3 credit hours,
   online)
   - *LIS 716 Leadership and Strategic Communication*, Alexis Sarkisian (3
   credit hours, on-campus, Monday 6-9 pm)
   - *LIS 723 Services to Children and Young Adults*, Amber Creger (3
   credit hours, on-campus, Thursday 1-4 pm)
   - *LIS 730 Cataloging and Classification*, Dr. Karen Snow (3 credit
   hours, on-campus, Wednesday 6-9 pm)
   - *LIS 744 Government Information Resources*, Lenora Berendt (3 credit
   hours, hybrid, 6 on-campus sessions Tuesday 6-9 pm)
   - *LIS 754 Systems Analysis and Design*, Dr. Stacy Kowalczyk (3 credit
   hours, hybrid, 8 on-campus sessions Monday 1-4 pm)
   - *LIS 755 Information Policy*, Ed Valauskas (3 credit hours, on-campus,
   Thursday 1-4 pm)
   - *LIS 764 Library User Instruction*, Troy Swanson (3 credit hours,
   on-campus, Wednesday 6-9 pm)
   - *LIS 769 Research Methods*, Dr. Don Hamerly (3 credit hours,
   on-campus, Wednesday 9 am-12 noon)
   - *LIS 804.01 Special Topics in Youth Services: Folk and Fairy Tales for
   Youth: History, Evolution, and Evaluation*, Dr. Janice Del Negro (1.5
   credit hours, on-campus, Wednesday 6-9 pm)
   - *LIS 804.03 Special Topics in Youth Services: Fairy Tale, Fantasy, and
   Popular Media: Radical Retellings for Young Adults*, Dr. Janice Del
   Negro (1.5 credit hours, on-campus Saturday 10 am-2 pm)
   - *LIS 805.01 Special Topics in Technology: Digital Content Creation*,
   Dr. Kate Marek (1.5 credit hours, on-campus Friday 1-4 pm)
   - *LIS 884 Big Data and Competitive Intelligence*, Dr. Yijun Gao (3
   credit hours, on-campus, Wednesday 6-9 pm)
   - *LIS 889 Digital Curation*, Dr. Stacy Kowalczyk (3 credit hours,
   on-campus, Wednesday 6-9 pm)

Up to six semester hours earned as a student-at-large may be applied toward
a degree or a certificate if the student subsequently wishes to apply to
GSLIS. We are excited about our new course delivery options, including 1.5
credit-hour courses, and a new one this spring: *LIS 796 Special Topics:
International Children's Book Fair*, which takes students to the Bologna
Children's Book Fair with Butler Children's Literature Center curator Thom
Barthelmess. There are no seats available for Bologna, but this course is
part of a new GSLIS initiative to increase student participation and
involvement in international book fairs. Planning is under way for special
topics courses for the Guadalajara and Frankfurt book fairs; stay tuned for
future announcements!
