Gran Canaria is a very sexy location but a bit pricey for some of us. To support Tom's proposal to hold the symposium at the University of Florida allow me to offer an additional inducement.

Those of you from ultima Thule should know that Gainesville, or Hogtown as it is properly known, is entirely unlike the rest of Florida, which is a dreary flat expanse of expressways and commercialism. Instead, our small yet cosmopolitan southern town features rolling forested hills with lakes, streams, and beautiful nearby springs. The city is so deeply green that it is nearly invisible from the air. Nearby Paynes prairie was once the snakeyest known place on earth; though sadly those days have passed, primarily in my opinion due to Ranavirus. We are justly famed for our alligators, many large examples of which live within the city limits. It is arguable that we have the greatest per capita concentration of herpetologists on the planet, the woods are full of them. The downtown nightlife is not for the weak of heart, this is after all a college town.

Just south of town is a mythical place known as Wacahoota. There I am privileged to own 22 acres of magnificent old growth forest. Many of my ancient oaks have trunks exceeding twenty feet in circumference, and are hung with moss and other epiphytes. I have carefully restored the forest such that there are numerous trails and beautiful glens perfect for camping. Symposium participants are free to do so for as long as they wish, and to use the facilities of my rustic cabin as need be. The backyard features a large party area which has often hosted gatherings of naturalists from around the world. Should this come to pass there will be a big bonfire and I will prepare a fine repast of roasted armadillo. You will have to bring your own beer.

So there you have it, a free place to camp and party in paradise!
