ENGAGEMENT NEWS

 

1.      Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity Holds Listening Sessions with External Communities

How is UT viewed in the Latino/Hispanic community? How is the UT community engaged with the Latino/Hispanic community? How would you like to see UT engaged with the community? These were questions the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity posed to the Latino/Hispanic community at a listening session on October 3.  Vice Chancellor Rickey Hall has made it a priority is to hold more listening sessions in the future, in hopes of learning from the external community on how UT may become a more engaged university.

2.      UT Recognized as Exemplary Partnership in  National C. Peter Magrath Competition

The Ohio State University’s Young Scholars Program is the 2013 recipient of the C. Peter Magrath University Community Engagement Award.  The Magrath recipient is chosen from a pool of four regional winners of a separate, Outreach Scholarship/W.K. Kellogg Foundation Award.   UT Knoxville was presented with a 2013 Exemplary Partnership Award for its own C. Peter Magrath submission at the Engagement Scholarship Consortium Conference earlier this fall.  UT's proposal, "Plan of Nashville," was prepared by Thomas K. Davis, Professor of Architecture, and was based on UT's ground-breaking partnership with the Nashville Civic Design Center.

3.      Sunha Choi Awarded for Research with Disadvantaged Older Adults

The Gerontological Society of American has awarded Choi, UT assistant professor of social work, the Senior Service American Senior Scholar Award for Research Related to Disadvantaged Older Adults. Choi was recognized for her paper “How does satisfaction with medical care differ by citizenship status and where they live?: A county-level multilevel analysis.”

4.      Invitation: UT Anthropology Student to Present Research Findings on Working with Knoxville's Mayan Community

UT student Gabriela Maldonado, a native of Guatemala, recently completed an internship with the Knox County Health Department.  During her internship, Maldonado developed a study about the Mayan Community in Knoxville, particularly community members living in the Lonsdale area.

5.      UT Partner Centro Hispano Celebrates Hope for Local Hispanics

Congratulations to UT Partner Centro Hispano, which celebrated 20 program graduates earlier this week.  Centro Hispano has service-learning partnerships with UT's department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures and UT's College of Law.

6.      Your voice needed as UT develops new Quality Enhancement Plan

All UT students, faculty & staff soon will receive an email survey about five potential QEP topics, at least one of which involves community engagement methodology; in addition, open forum discussions are planned over the next few weeks. 7.      Comment Period for Citizen Science Association Documents Ends Friday (Nov. 22)

Those with a stake in this field of practice (public participation in scientific research) are encouraged to review and offer comments on these core documents, concerning association governance, conferences, communications, and a journal.

8.      Call for abstracts:  Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning

MJCSL is now seeing articles for volume 21 (fall 2014, spring 2015). The first step in the submission process is to send editor ([log in to unmask]) an abstract or precis by December 20th, preferably no more than a page in length. Invitations to submit an article will be made by email no later than mid-January,  with invited articles due the last Monday in March (3.31.14). The MJCSL is a national, peer-reviewed journal with faculty and administrator subscribers and readers all over the world, and publishes articles on: - research, theory, pedagogy, and other issues pertinent to curriculum-based service-learning;  campus-community partnerships; scholarship of engagement, and scholarship on engagement.

9.      Call for Proposals: Imagining America Institutes 2014-2015

Imagining America is seeking proposals for institutes on a wide range of topics that relate to strengthening publicly engaged scholarship in the arts, humanities, and design. Proposals that advance Imagining America’s commitment to full participation and equity are particularly encouraged. Proposed institutes should be aimed at fostering leadership for institutional change by engaging teams from Imagining America’s partnerships in action-oriented learning and organizing.

10.  2014 Upper Midwest Civic Engagement Summit - Request for Session Proposals

Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin Campus Compact invite proposals for 60-minute skill-building or issue-focused sessions, 15-minute innovation mini-sessions, and posters for the Upper Midwest Civic Engagement Summit. The Summit will provide opportunities for faculty, professional staff, student and community leaders interested in civic engagement activities to network and learn from one another.   The conference will be held June 12-13, 2014 in Menomonie, Wisconsin at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

11.  Wells Fargo and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Accepting Applications for Environmental Solutions for Communities Grant Program

This grant program is designed to help communities in the United States develop a more sustainable future through environmental stewardship. Wells Fargo and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation are seeking projects that successfully  address relevant sustainability topics, including: cost-effective stewardship of water quality, wildlife, and agricultural productivity; community-based conservation of local habitats and natural sites; urban forestry; and sustainability education for community leaders, among many others. Grants will range from $25,000 to $100,000 for projects of up to eighteen months in duration.

This interview with Dr. John Ruffin, conducted by the University of Maryland Center for Health Equity, touches on several key issues pertaining to engaged scholarship with minority participants. These include Community Based Participatory Research, minority inclusion in research, researcher training, and eliminating health disparities.

14.  Now Online: Fall 2103 volume of the International Undergraduate Journal on Service-learning, Leadership, and Social Change

The Journal only accepts articles from undergraduate students. The Journal considers three types of articles: (1) Articles that discuss the development of a service-learning project and the impact of the project on the community served; (2) Case studies of service-learning projects; and (3) Reflections on service-learning and the development of personal leadership.
