Project V.E.G.G.I.E. plans faculty/staff day

Project V.E.G.G.I.E. proudly announces the Official Project V.E.G.G.I.E. Faculty/Staff Day on Friday, November 22, at the project's garden, adjacent to the Andy Holt Parking Garage at Volunteer Blvd. (click here for directions). The event is officially 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m., but faculty and staff are welcome to visit from 9:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

Project V.E.G.G.I.E. stands for “Vols Educating about Growing Gardens and Inspiring Environmentalism.”  The Project is currently in its second full year of operation and was awarded Organization of the Year this past April by the Dean of Students. Project V.E.G.G.I.E. does just what the name says: growing and maintaining the first ever main campus community garden here at the University of Tennessee.

The project's goal is to inspire and educate enough students of the importance of living sustainably and how that can be accomplished through gardening, that we make a positive change in the world. Additionally, we hope to reach enough students that a significant amount of them one day start community gardens of their own, wherever they might end up.

Featured student: Samuel Peter Rakoczy

Samuel RakoczyThis week's student is Samuel Peter Rakoczy, at right, a mechanical engineering major who accepted a co-op at BMW Manufacturing Company, LLC, located in Greer, South Carolina.

Rakoczy describes the department he worked in and what his main responsibilities were.

"I worked in TS-482 Tool Design, where we design and oversee the manufacturing of tools used in assembly," said Rakoczy. "I was an integral part of the team, evident by the amount of tools I personally designed and the degree of difficulty of tools I was designing. I was responsible for acquiring quotes from machine shops and overseeing the process of building the tool until it is accepted by the process planners."

Rakoczy benefited from valuable experience during his co-op assignment.

"CATIA design experience is extremely valuable in the industry," said Rakoczy. "BMW is a great employer. If you like cars, and are a hard worker, this is a great place to be."

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work–In Their Own Words.” For information on engineering co-op and internships, contact [log in to unmask] or 865-974-5323.
