UT Panel Discussion with Federal Co-Chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission
The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is a regional economic development agency that represents a partnership of federal, state, and local
government. Each year ARC funds hundreds of regional projects that create new jobs; improve local water and sewer systems; increase school readiness; expand access to health care; assist local communities with strategic planning; and provide technical and
managerial assistance to emerging businesses. ARC co-chair Earl Gohl will join a panel discussion about the past, present, and future of the Appalachian region. Free and open to the public.

Seven campus proposals from six UT Knoxville colleges have been selected for 2013-14 Outreach and Incentive Grants
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville provides special project funding for community-campus partnerships that specifically enhance the engagement
mission of the university. This funding is allocated through a competitive annual grant process early in the fall semester.

Centro Hispano Seeking Service-Learning Partnerships with Faculty
Centro Hispano de East Tennessee’s mission is to promote empowerment and civic participation of the Hispanic community through education, advocacy,
and social services. Centro Hispano seeks partner faculty across disciplines to design credit-bearing service-learning opportunities by which students can improve their Spanish-speaking skills and gain valuable professional experience. Opportunities are available
both for advanced Spanish speakers and those with little to no Spanish speaking ability. Possible service projects include tutoring clients in Spanish, assisting with information referrals, tutoring clients’ children (no Spanish required), helping to brand
and publicize the organization, and supporting grant efforts.

The Bonner Center at Carson-Newman is now accepting applications for 2014 AmeriCorps VISTA Fellows. VISTA Fellows are matched with local non-profit
partners where they connect the resources of Carson-Newman University and those of the community to address social inequities. Program benefits include living allowance; health coverage; relocation allowance (if eligible); Child care assistance (if eligible);
and a $5,500 Segal Education Award or a $1,500 stipend at end of service.

The National Endowment of the Arts: “Our Town” Creative Placemaking Grant Program
This program seeks to invest in creative projects that feature partnerships between communities and local arts and design organizations. Ideally,
these projects should “foster strong community identity and a sense of place” and “revitalize economic development.” “Our Town” applications must reflect partnerships between two primary entities – nonprofit organizations and local governments. Additional
partners are encouraged. Grants will range in size from $25,000 to $200,000.

Big Read: Grants for Community-Wide Reading Programs
The Big Read, a National Endowment of the Arts program, aims to restore reading to the center of American culture through the development of
reading programs that encourage reading and participation by community audiences. Programs may include book discussions, art exhibits, lectures, and panel discussions. The program is accepting applications from nonprofit organizations to develop reading programs
between September 2014 and June 2015. Selected organizations will receive a grant, educational materials, and access to online training resources. Approximately 75 organizations will be selected from communities across the United States. Eligible organizations
may apply for grants ranging from $2,500 to $20,000. Grants must be matched with non-federal funds.

William T. Grant Foundation: Research in Policy and Practice Affecting Youth
The William T. Grant Foundation seeks to fund research focused on improving the lives of youth between the ages of 8 and 25 in the United States.
The foundation is interested in policy and practice relevant to youth in the United States. Areas of focus may include child welfare, education, juvenile justice, health, family support, employment, and mental health, and youth programs. Support will be provided
for studies related to what affects policy makers’ and practitioners’ acquisition, interpretation, and application of research evidence. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be employed at a nonprofit institution. The foundation will support the
select research projects with awards ranging from $100,000 to $600,000 over two to three years.

Now Online: Inaugural Issue of the International Journal of Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IJRSLCE)
This open access peer-reviewed online journal features high-quality research focused on campus-community engagement, service-learning, and
the promotion of active citizenship through education. The journal will be published annually and will release a call for paper for the Fall 2014 issue in early 2014. The inaugural issue features several articles of interest to community-engaged scholars.
