PlanET teams with Office of Provost to welcome Oregon’s “Sustainable City Year Program” to Knoxville

Monday, December 9; Black Cultural Center, Room 94

Co-Directors and faculty members of the University of Oregon's Sustainable Cities Initiative (SCI), and city representatives from Springfield, Oregon will share their successful partnership experiences that included 30 different university courses across multiple disciplines as UT prepares its own “Smart Communities” initiative based on the Oregon model. Please join us to learn about an exciting new twist on university-community engagement that can yield significant benefits for our students, faculty, University, and Tennessee communities.  Hear why this program has been called "perhaps the most comprehensive effort by a U.S. university to infuse sustainability into its curricula and community outreach" (NY Times) and "one of higher education's most successful and comprehensive service-learning programs" (Chronicle of Higher Education).

▪ 11:30-1:30: UT faculty session: models & methods for incorporating program into existing and future courses. Lunch provided. RSVP: [log in to unmask]

2-3:30 pm: University of Oregon and Springfield City Government Presentation and Panel Discussion for faculty, staff, students, and local government

▪ 3:30-5 pm: Breakout meetings with city/county staff, faculty, and administrators

These sessions are designed to share the model, answer your questions, and help launch a new program in the most successful way.  You can read more about the Oregon model in advance at http://sci.uoregon.edu/press
