KNOXVILLE – LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning) youth occupy an overwhelming percentage of homeless youth on the streets today, often due to family conflict related to their sexual orientation and/or bullying and discrimination at school. Library Anchor Models for Bridging Diversity Achievements (LAMBDA) brings together the University of Tennessee’s School of Information Sciences and the Center for Literacy, Education & Employment to provide education training, workshops and materials to support public library staff members who serve LGBTQ homeless youth. The LAMBDA project team announces the release of their new website http://lambda.sis.utk.edu/

LAMBDA is a grant project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The School of Information Sciences team is led by co-PIs SIS Director and Professor Ed Cortez and Beth Ponder. 

 

“Libraries have long been a center of community service and information,” said Cortez. “LAMBDA offers much needed information resources for public librarians as they seek to serve this special population.  Locating and vetting critically needed information can sometimes be a challenge due to constrained resources.  This new website bridges the divide between people and information and brings real solutions into focus.”

 

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. Through grant making, policy development, and research, IMLS helps communities and individuals thrive through broad public access to knowledge, cultural heritage, and lifelong learning.
