This week we're celebrating the community-engaged work of Dr. Paul Terry! Terry, associate professor of public health, received a 2012 Outreach
Incentive Grant to engage the community in two large-scale educational seminars on the importance of colorectal cancer screening, an effective but underused way of saving lives.

Making Art Side-by-Side with University Assisted Community School Students
Stephanie Cramer, Assistant Professor, Theory & Practice in Teacher Education, used her 2012 Outreach Incentive grant to make art with UAS
children and then to exhibit it at both the Beck Cultural Arts and Exchange Center and the Knoxville Museum of Art. Cramer was UTK Community Engagement’s

UT's Landscape Architecture Program Partners with City, PlanET, to Protect Water Sources
UT faculty and students worked with the City of Knoxville and the Plan East Tennessee (PlanET) to create a guide to protect the region’s water
sources. This regional initiative was supported by a grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Three UT Fulbright Scholars to Focus on International Concerns
Wanda Costen, associate professor in Retail, Hospitality, and Tourism Management;
Scott Frey, professor of sociology and co-director of the Center for the Study of Social Justice; and
Rebecca Klenk, lecturer in interdisciplinary programs and affiliated faculty member with the Anthropology Department and the Disaster, Displacement, and Human Rights Program were selected for prestigious Fulbright Scholarships for their work
in international communities.

As part of The University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s commitment to community collaboration and engaged scholarship, the Chancellor provides
special project funding for proposals that specifically enhance the public engagement mission of the university. Proposals may be for community-engaged projects or partnerships that promote the principles of engagement as applied to research, teaching, or
outreach. The 2013 program is primarily directed at faculty-led initiatives, though the involvement of students is encouraged. Prospective applicants are also strongly encouraged to review funding guidelines and previously-funded projects.

A Blade of Grass: Socially Engaged Art
A Blade of Grass funds artists who are working in leadership roles, in active partnership with communities, in ways that are relevant in everyday
life, at ambitious scale, to enact social change. The program also offers project support to arts organizations that enable ambitious relevant socially engaged art projects by placing artists in leaderships roles and building active and sustainable community
partnerships. With all our grants and fellowships, we prioritize initiatives that happen outside traditional art contexts by actively engaging communities in a meaningful way.

The Open Society Fellowship supports individuals pursuing innovative and unconventional approaches that will enrich public understanding of

Community-engaged research expert participates in Congressional briefing
(Friday, Sept. 27, 2013) Steven Woolf, M.D., professor in
the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, was one of four featured speakers on Capitol Hill this week discussing, “What’s Ailing America?” “This was an important briefing because it carried the message to Congress that the research to solve
the U.S. health disadvantage will not occur exclusively in laboratories or teaching hospitals,” Woolf said.

New: NIEHS Manual: Partnerships for Environmental Public Health Evaluation
The Partnerships for Environmental Public Health Evaluation Metrics Manual, produced by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
(a subset of NIH), provides examples of tangible metrics that PEPH grantees and program staff can use for both planning and evaluation. Example logic models are used as a means to develop evaluation metrics for cross-cutting PEPH themes such as Partnerships,
Leveraging, Products and Dissemination, Education and Training and Capacity Building. PEPH grantees (including all project partners) are the primary target audience for this document.

The latest issue of Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning includes an article co-authored by Community-Campus Partnerships for Health's senior
consultant Sherril Gelmon, CES4Health Editor Cathy Jordan, and CCPH Executive Director Sarena Seifer. The article makes recommendations for how higher education can fully embrace community-engaged scholarship.
