School Libraries Worldwide is the official professional and research journal of the International Association of School Librarianship. It is published twice yearly, in January and July, and is available online and through select periodical databases. School Libraries Worldwide publishes new works of current research and scholarship on any aspect of school librarianship. All papers are double-blind peer reviewed and adhere to the highest editorial standards. The January 2014 issue of School Libraries Worldwide will center on the theme of Curation: Building the Learning Resource Base through Selection, Management, and Promotion of School Library Collections. As Steven Rosenbaum wrote in his recent book Curation Nation (2011), “Curation has always been the process of discerning quality. But in an era of abundance, the definition of quality needs to evolve to suit its intended audience” (p.6). For this issue, we use this definition is our point of departure in considering the many curating roles of school libraries and librarians. We encourage papers that both affirm and extend this initial definition. This issue will provide an opportunity for researchers to share their research relating to the librarian’s role in collection development and curation in school libraries and management of the affordances thereof. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: • Using the collection as a basis for building collaborative relationships; • Expanding the definition of the collection to include experts and student generated materials; • Ubiquitous computing, Bring Your Own Technology, or mobile device use; • Differentiating instruction with resource variety; • Aligning resources to curriculum standards and other learning objectives; • Describing resources through tagging, student reviews, and other paradata; • Integrating digital and physical resources; • Promoting new forms of resources like graphic novels and data sets; and • Positioning school libraries as makerspaces in which resources are created and consumed. School library researchers are invited to submit papers reporting their own original research that has not been published elsewhere. Authors who wish to know more about the issue theme should contact the editors. School Libraries Worldwide also welcomes submissions of excellent research on any topic relating to school librarianship for the open portion of the journal.
