Dr. Sally Hunter: Bringing Technology Inside and Outside the Classroom

Check out the new OIT Faculty Spotlight!  Dr. Sally Hunter, from the Department of Child and Family Studies, will discuss how she teaches with technology.  There is not much paper wasted in Dr. Hunter’s class.  Her students complete assignments and assessments electronically using Blackboard Learn tools.

Dr. Hunter brings visitors either to the actual classroom, or virtually through an online video call.  A SMART Board, document camera, and web conferencing system are important tools in her classroom.

Watch the video to hear about Dr. Hunter’s Online Fridays, her plan to teach one class fully online, and more. Visit the Spotlight Archive to learn how other faculty members use technology in their classes and research.

ArcGIS®

ArcGIS® from Esri is an integrated suite of software packages for working with maps and geographic information.  In addition to creating maps, it can be used to compile geographic data, analyze mapped information, manage geographic information in databases, and perform a range of other applications.  The system also provides a platform for making maps and geographic information available throughout an organization or openly on the Web.

Extensions to the basic ArcGIS® software packages provide the ability to perform specialized types of analyses and/or mapping functions, including spatial and geo-statistical extensions that provide more advanced data analysis functions, and an extension that provides the basic ArcGIS® functions in three dimensional rendering. Other extensions can be used to include survey data in maps, analyze networks, or integrate mapping functions with computer aided drafting programs.

ArcGIS® is available in most of OIT's computer labs. Faculty and staff can click here to download ArcGIS® software from the OIT software distribution site.  Students can obtain a free, one-year copy of the Student Edition from Map Services in Hodges Library or from Research Computing Support, Greve Hall, room 517.

An update to ArcGIS®, version 10.2, will be released sometime during the 2013 Fall semester.  OIT currently offers limited support of the ESRI product line.  Please contact the OIT Helpdesk at 974-9900 to request license codes and provisioning files, or for answers to questions about ArcGIS® software.

IT Community of Practice (ITCoP)

Brown Bag Lunch!

OIT is looking forward to September’s ITCoP Brown Bag meeting on Wednesday, 9/25/13, from 11:30am-12:30pm.

Faculty are invited to join colleagues in a discussion of the topic, “Tools to Engage Students Outside the Traditional Classroom”.  Speakers will be: Kim Smith – Lecturer, Mathematics, and James Kidder – Lecturer, Anthropology. The meeting will be held in the Practice Presentation Room, 220E, Hodges Library Commons. Click here for more information on the ITCoP.

The robust R Package

When performing various statistical analyses, outliers within data can significantly affect model development and the resulting conclusions drawn from the analysis. Robust techniques can be applied to datasets that have a small number of outliers to lessen their effects in the resulting model.  Fortunately, an R package named ‘robust’ can perform several types of analyses that help to compensate for outliers.

This package contains robust methods that far exceed those offered in most statistical software packages. ‘robust’ contains several techniques that include robust linear regression, a robust general linear model, robust logistic regression, and robust parameter estimation procedures for the Gamma, Weibull, and Lognormal distributions. These techniques not only take into account the presence of outliers in the analysis, but also help to compensate for their effects.

If outliers exist in your dataset, OIT’s Research Computing Support group can help you perform robust techniques to produce more reliable results.  For free assistance, contact the OIT Help Desk at 974-9900 or stop by our walk-in area in Greve 517. View our walk-in support schedule.

Web Surveys with Qualtrics

Rollout Meeting

OIT is providing a free new service, Qualtrics, that lets users create web-based surveys quickly and easily!

Come to the Qualtrics Rollout Meeting and discover how students, faculty, and staff can use their own new Qualtrics accounts to create surveys that are as quick and easy, or as complex and powerful, as needed. Qualtrics users will even be able to collaborate on their survey design with colleagues. The meeting will be in the University Center, Shiloh Room on Monday, September 9, from 10:10-11:10.

OIT Consults on Instructional Design

Need help structuring a course or course activity? If so, OIT has instructional designers who will work one-on-one with you, regardless of whether your course is in a classroom, online, or blended.

In addition, OIT experts can help with the design and development of instructional elements including support with presentations, images, banners, animations, and interactive elements.

Simply complete a short faculty request form describing your ideas and we'll follow up by making an appointment to discuss your goals!
