Dear GRC:

Please see the email below from Dr. Paul Armsworth of the University of Tennessee Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (http://eeb.bio.utk.edu/). The UT EEB offers a large number of assistantships/scholarships each year to pursue graduate studies. These positions are very competitive but worth applying for if you know of highly qualified candidates.

Another standing opportunity for graduate student and post-doc support at UT are NIMBioS fellowships:

http://www.nimbios.org/education/grad_students
http://www.nimbios.org/postdocs/

Students/post-docs with epidemiological interests and reasonable mathematical skills would be strong candidates.

The UT Center for Wildlife Health works closely with EEB and NIMBioS; thus, if individuals secured one of these fellowships and had an interest to work on ranaviruses, there could be opportunities for collaborative research. For example, I am currently working with a NIMBioS post-doc to model the likelihood of ranaviruses causing local extirpation of amphibian species.

Please pass along these possibilities to individuals that may be interested.

All the Best---
Matt

Subject: Opportunities for Graduate Study in the US

Dear all,

I wanted to let you know about opportunities for funded Masters and PhD opportunities here at University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

We can offer fully funded PhD and Masters degrees in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. For example, if we make an offer of a PhD place to a student, we would cover the student's tuition fees, pay them a salary, cover health insurance, etc. for up to 5 years provided they made satisfactory academic progress, just as a scholarship would do. One difference from a scholarship is that students would be expected to do some teaching. However, getting experience of teaching is often something students welcome if they plan to go academic track.

The application process is competitive, but anyone from anywhere in the world is eligible to apply, and we would very much like to have more international applicants in our applicant pool. If you would be interested we would love to hear from you. Similarly, if you know of any students coming through who are looking for international scholarship opportunities like this in ecology and evolutionary biology, please encourage them to send me an email.

You can find out a bit about graduate study in EEB via the Department's website (http://eeb.bio.utk.edu/) including details of the application process. You can also learn a lot from spending time in individual faculty member's websites. For example, I have a section on my own website with advice for prospective graduate students (http://web.utk.edu/~parmswor/joining.html) as do a number of my colleagues.

Graduate students in EEB typically apply to work with a particular advisor from the get-go. Therefore working out if we have a faculty member working on the topics and questions that interest you, and then getting to know that individual by email and getting to know their work by reading their papers is critical. I have attached a draft list we are building of some of the topics where faculty members envision admitting graduate students next year. This list is not complete yet. But it might give people some ideas about the diversity of research opportunities that we can offer.

Thanks for considering these opportunities and in anticipation of any help you can give us with getting word out.

Paul Armsworth
