All,

This information came specifically to me from Dr. Dave Ostermeier, a friend who is a recently retired UTK faculty member in Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries at UT  (in other words, a very trusted source for international conservation opportunities). If you are interested (and not in my Tuesday evening seminar!), consider attending the informational session next Tuesday.

Subject: Summer Field Opportunity

Hi Sherry and Carol:  I wanted to make both of you aware of a really interesting organization and opportunity for UTK students including those in your departments.  They are doing some amazing work and for the right student provides a great opportunity to visit some amazing places and do so under the guidance of a scientific organization.  Take a quick look at their website, and please send the message below to your students.  Thanks for your help.  Dave

Operation Wallacea <http://opwall.com/> is a biodiversity research and conservation management organization hosting scientific expeditions in Indonesia, Transylvania, South Africa, Madagascar, Peru, Guyana,Cuba, Honduras and Mexico. In addition to focusing on biological field work and studies, the organization also focuses on human behavioral and management work of particular interest to social science students.  Accordingly, field work includes human survey work around human-biodiversity relationships, including eco-tourism and other economic and social linkages.

These research sites are run in remote locations with the help of university volunteers and academics from around the world. Students may join Wallacea for the opportunity to earn credit through the University of St. Andrews as research assistants, to work on a senior or Master’s thesis, or to simply gain field research experience in a volunteer-based internship. There is also the option of participating in a unique expedition medicine course for pre-med students. Some of the research topics offered on site include marine ecology, agriculture, spatial ecology, genetics, herpetofauna, and environmental science. More importantly, all research conducted is a contribution towards protecting valuable ecosystems by levering funding and monitoring the success of conservation management strategies. To learn more about these research opportunities, Dr. Tim Coles (Wallacea founder) will discuss how students can become involved on Tuesday, October 1 at 5:30 in room 128 Ellington Plant Science Building.
