Dear Undergraduate Geographers:

It is my pleasure to announce that the Department of Geography at the University of Tennessee will hold its 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award Ceremony, honoring two special members of our family:

·         Edward “Eddie” Bright (MS, 1982)  -- in recognition of his pioneering contributions to the fields of remote sensing, GIS, and land use-cover analysis

·         Ruth Shirey (MS, 1968; PhD, 1970) – in recognition of her nationally prominent contributions to the field of geographic education

The Award Ceremony will be held at the UTK Hodges Library on Thursday, September 26, 2013.  A reception honoring the awardees will be held in the Mary Greer Room, beginning at 3:30pm.  The presentation of the awards will follow at 4:00pm in the Hodges Library Auditorium.

You are an important part of the UTK Geography community and I want to personally invite you to attend.

This is a grand opportunity to reconnect with the Department’s history and honor two special graduates of the program.  Mr. Bright and Dr. Shirey will have an opportunity to share thoughts about their time at UTK, the professors who positively impacted their lives, and valuable lessons they have learned as professional geographers.  Knowing where we have come from is essential to charting a course for the future.

I look forward to seeing you at the ceremony.

Thank you,

Derek
