The 175th Anniversary Gala will be on Friday October 4th, along with the John D. Tickle Engineering Building Dedication, and open house and tours of the engineering campus and a networking lunch with current engineering students.
Personal Computer Co-Inventor Mark Dean
Joins College of Engineering Faculty
Mark Dean, co-inventor of the personal computer, joined UT’s College of Engineering faculty September 1. Dean arrives at UT from IBM, where he most recently served as chief technology officer for IBM Middle East and Africa, based in Dubai.
Diversity Summer Programs Give a Pre-College Taste of Engineering
The College of Engineering hosted five pre-college engineering diversity summer programs in2013. A total of 148 seventh-twelfth grade students came to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville for a week-long, age-appropriate immersion in engineering.

College of Engineering Student Ambassadors attended the Eastman Chemical Company’s Ambassador Leadership Forum August 14-15, 2013, at the company’s headquarters in Kingsport, Tennessee.
EECS Alumnus Wes Kendall Co-founds Company In Chattanooga
An Electrical Engineering and Computer Science alumnus has launched a company that aims to help leaders develop in the workplace. Wes Kendall (’07, ’09, ’11), above left, is a co-founder of Chattanooga-based Ambition LLC, whose computer programs enable employees to hone and enhance their skills by identifying challenges and goals. Dr. Jian Huang, above right was his PhD advisor at UT.
Aqua-Chem Inc. Partners with UT Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering
Aqua-Chem Inc. and the University of Tennessee's Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering teamed up to assist Aqua-Chem in continuous process improvements during the Lean Enterprise Summer Program. A diverse group of twenty-eight students, representing six countries, descended on Aqua-Chem from July 2-26, 2013, to look at continuous improvement opportunities in the areas of: Warehouse, Materials, Engineering, and Manufacturing.
Professor Jack Dongarra Announces New Supercomputer Software and Benchmark
Dr. Jack Dongarra, director of the College of Engineering's Innovative Computing Laboratory (ICL), recently announced a new benchmark for measuring the speed of the next generation of supercomputers. It is called the High Performance Conjugate Gradient (HPCG). In addition to the new benchmark, Dongarra is designing software that will be critical in making these supercomputers operational.
