1.      Campus Presentation:  What Does an “Engaged” University Look Like?

Julie E. Williams, Senior Vice Provost for Engagement and Academic Outreach at the University of New Hampshire, will be presenting next Thursday, September 26, 1-2 pm in the Hodges Library Auditorium.  Opening remarks by Provost Susan Martin and Vice Chancellor for Research & Engagement, Taylor Eighmy.

2.       UT’s Clara Lee Brown: Promoting Family Literacy and Cross-Cultural Community

This week, we’re celebrating 2012 Outreach Grant winner Clara Lee Brown, who collaborated with Lenoir City Elementary school in a “Literacy Night” project to promote family literacy skills for parents and their children.

3.      HUD Introduce New metrics, Dashboard for Meeting Low-Income Community Needs

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will be holding a live webcast on  The Democracy Collaborative’s new report: The Anchor Dashboard: Aligning Institutional Practice to Meet Low-Income Community Needs. 4.      2013 Call for Proposals:  UTK Engagement Funding

As part of The University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s commitment to community collaboration and engaged scholarship, the Chancellor provides special project funding for proposals that specifically enhance the public engagement mission of the university.  Proposals may be for community-engaged projects or partnerships that promote the principles of engagement as applied to research, teaching, or outreach.  The 2013 program is primarily directed at faculty-led initiatives, though the involvement of students is encouraged.  Prospective applicants are also strongly encouraged to review funding guidelines and previously-funded projects.

5.      Alliance of Women Philanthropists Accepting Giving Circle Applicants

The university's Alliance of Women Philanthropists is accepting applicants for its Giving Circle grants program. The alliance looks for grants that will inspire leadership and collaboration within the UT community. Grants range from $2,500 to $25,000. Grant recipients will be announced in February.

6.      Gates Foundation Invites Proposals for Round 12 of Grand Challenges Explorations

$100,000 grants are now available through The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s latest   Grand Challenges Explorations initiative, a ground-breaking grant program encouraging bold approaches aimed at improving the lives of the world’s poorest people.

7.      Foundation Directory Online (FDO) now a free public service

Unlike existing public tools for retrieving information about grantmaking foundations, the Foundation Center’s new tool adds additional search functionality that previously was only possible through the Center's premier subscription product. In addition to the ability to keyword-search across foundation 990-PFs, FDO Free allows you to search the profiles of nearly 90,000 private foundations by name, EIN, location, or keyword.

8.      New: NIEHS Manual: Partnerships for Environmental Public Health Evaluation Metrics

This new manual, developed by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in collaboration with grantees, includes a logic model & metrics for evaluating activities, outputs & impacts of environmental public health research. More than 80 narratives provide real-world examples of “metrics in action.”  The Partnerships for Environmental Public Health Evaluation Metrics Manual is the latest product of community-engaged scholarship peer-reviewed & published through CES4Health. 9.      IDEA FILE: Dear Syracuse, With Love

In April 2013, a community photo contest, led by Syracuse University Student Quinton Fletchall, asked residents and students to explore the city and take photos of what they thought was beautiful. "I wanted to take these photos and show them, not just in a gallery setting, but where they were part of a larger conversation,” Quinton explained. The photos are now displayed as part of an ongoing billboard series in downtown Syracuse. (H/T Imagining America)
