Company Description

The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) is the national trade association representing recreation vehicle (RV) and recreational park trailers manufacturers and their component part suppliers.

A “Recreation Vehicle” or “RV” is a vehicular type unit that is regulated to some extent by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as a vehicle or vehicle equipment and is primarily designed as temporary living quarters for non-commercial, recreational and/or camping use.    The basic product categories are: “Motorhome” and “towable RV”.  A “Recreational Vehicle” typically comes equipped with permanently installed life support systems.

A “Recreational Park Trailer Vehicle” or “RPT”  is built to the standards for recreational park trailers adopted by the Association’s Board of Directors and is primarily designed as temporary living quarters for non-commercial, recreational and/or camping use.  A “RPT” is built on a single chassis mounted on wheels and has a gross trailer area not exceeding 400 square feet (37.15 square meters) in the setup mode.

Headquartered in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, RVIA is a unifying force for quality and professionalism within the RV industry and works with both federal and state government agencies to protect the interests of the RV industry.

A clearinghouse of industry facts and information, RVIA also provides free material to consumers about RV travel and camping and actively works with the media nationwide to educate the public about the benefits of RVing.

RVIA provides an inspection program to monitor the voluntary compliance of its manufacturer members with the plumbing, heating, fire and life safety, and electrical system requirements set forth in the National Fire Protection Agency standard for RVs.  RVIA also provides an on-going Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards education program for its members.

The association can trace its roots back to the earliest days of automotive travel.  When the Trailer Coach Association (TCA) was formed in 1936, the term RV did not yet exist.  As the RV industry evolved, two national trade groups represented RV manufacturers through the early 1970s.  In 1974, these associations merged to form the RVIA we know today.
