Subject: RE: Diagnostic laboratories

Dear Ann and GRC:

There are a few resources with a partial list of diagnostic labs that test for ranavirus; see the following links:

http://fwf.ag.utk.edu/mgray/SEPARC/SEPARCShippingFinal.pdf

http://fwf.ag.utk.edu/mgray/Publications/Greenetal2009_DoddCh26.pdf (see page 494)

Ann’s email highlights the need for a comprehensive list by continent of diagnostic laboratories, or research laboratories that are willing to process samples for individuals.  To standardize the submission of information and reduce emails to the LISTSERV, please submit laboratory information to your GRC continental representative (see list at: http://fwf.ag.utk.edu/mgray/ranavirus/Ranavirus.htm) by Friday, 30 August.  Your representative will submit submissions to the GRC (Amanda Duffus), and we will post on the website for reference.

Please format your submission as:

LABORATORY NAME and CONTACT INFORMATION

TYPE: Diagnostic, Research, or Both

SERVICES OFFERED: (e.g., PCR, qPCR, ELISA, RFLP, MCP sequencing, genomic sequencing, virus culture, EM, histology, immunohistochemistry, etc)

AVERAGE COST:  Provide typical cost per sample for each test or a range; indicated currency

For Example,

University of Tennessee Center for Wildlife Health

274 Ellington Plant Sciences Building

Knoxville TN 37996 USA

865-974-7126

Email: [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask]

http://wildlifehealth.tennessee.edu/

TYPE: Both

SERVICES: PCR, qPCR, virus culture, MCP sequencing, histology

Average Cost: $20 – $100 USD per sample depending on service(s)

Hi,

Our lab also performs real-time quantitative PCR testing for ranaviruses as well (using a MCP probe).  For more information, please see the following website:

Best,
Andrew

Our lab is offering real-time PCR for diagnostic or research applications on a fee-for-service and collaborative basis.  We also can provide: 1) conventional PCR and sequencing (MCP, Pol and NF) for preliminary characterization of positive samples (e.g. FV3-like vs ATV-like); 2) PCR from ethanol or formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissues (FFPE); and 3) Histopathology to support outbreak investigations or characterization of tissue changes associated with experimental infections.

Hi Ann,

That is something that the GRC was planning on offering. Perhaps we can use this opportunity to push up our due-date.

Would those offering diagnostic services email me a list of what you can offer and the terms. For instance, my lab can perform quantitative real time PCR and isolate and titer live ranaviruses, but we generally only do small numbers of samples or collaborate with others on larger projects; we are not a fee-for-service operation. I have a web page with instructions for submission here: http://public.wsu.edu/~jesse.brunner/samples.html

I'm sure there are others and it would be very useful to put together a list. We will add a page with this information on the GRC website once we revise it.
