COE team studies redlight camera programs
A study by Dr. Lee Han, Dr. Chris Cherry, and graduate student Qiang Yang of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is published in this month’s issue of
Transport Policy journal. The team analyzed the use of redlight cameras to determine if traffic control measures intended to boost redlight revenue—such as shortening yellow-light time or increasing the speed limit on a street—compromise safety.
The authors analyzed prior research related to four traffic signal measures—shortening yellow duration and/or lengthening all-red duration, shortening cycle length, increasing the speed limit and increasing high volume-to-capacity conditions such as with an
unwarranted turn signal—and their impacts on red light running, safety, and efficiency.

Weather and climate impact on air quality will be forum topic at Baker Center
Dr. Joshua Fu, an associate professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will speak on "Extreme Weather Events and Climate Impact on Air Quality and Energy Infrastructure in the US in 2050" during the Baker Center Energy
and Environment Forum 3:30-5:00 p.m. Thursday, August 29, in the Toyota Auditorium of the Howard Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy, 1640 Cumberland Avenue.
The talk presents predictions regarding future changes in extreme weather events in the eastern United States by mid-century under a scenario of intensive fossil fuel use. Fu's research focuses on air pollution and climate change modeling and on assessing the
impacts of extreme events on health and water resources and of transportation planning and energy usages on air quality.
The Baker Center Energy and Environment Forum is an opportunity for academics to share their research findings to a broad set of academics, researchers, and students from outside their own discipline but who have a common interest in environmental and energy
issues. It is sponsored by TNSCORE.

Engineers Day scheduled for October 24
Engineers Day has been a UT College of Engineering tradition for more than 100 years. Each October, undergraduate engineering classes are dismissed for one day to allow university students and faculty to spend time interacting with hundreds of potential engineering
students from high schools across the region.
In 2012, close to 1,200 students from fifty-five different high schools (and some home schoolers) traveled to UT’s Knoxville campus to explore and learn about the various aspects of engineering through discussions, project demonstrations and exhibits prepared
by UT engineering student clubs and societies. Participants experienced an overview of the different engineering disciplines and saw examples of how an engineer’s work impacts daily life. It is our goal that students involved in Engineers Day will be inspired
by the ever-growing field of engineering.
Engineers Day features five competitions for visiting students. Results for the 2012 Quiz Bowl, Egg Drop Competition, ASCE High School Balsa Wood Bridge Competition, Food Battery Competition and Radiation Shielding Competition can be found at
http://www.engr.utk.edu/ed/competitions.html.
If you would like more information on this event, please contact the Engineering Academic & Student Affairs office at (865) 974-2454.

Featured co-op student: Evan Falk
Our student this week is Evan Falk, pictured at right, a chemical engineering major, who accepted a co-op
at The Dow Chemical Company, located in Midland, Michigan.
Falk describes the department he worked in and what his main responsibilities were.
“I worked in the emulsions department of a coatings facility," he said. "My responsibilities were to assist the Run Plant Engineers and perform similar tasks as they do. For instance, I was given the task to determine why a particular product had low concentrations
of solids, and another to determine why a computerized heat balance was malfunctioning.”
Work experience was the most valuable benefit Evan received during his co-op assignment.
“I received an opportunity to gain experience in a field that interested me and able to work in that field while still in school," he said. "This experience has been invaluable to me for these reasons.”
Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via
