1. Save the Date: Sept. 26 UT Presentation by National Engagement Expert

Julie E. Williams, Senior Vice Provost for Engagement and Academic Outreach at the University of New Hampshire, will lead a public conversation on Thursday, September 26, 1-3 pm in the UC Crest Room. Williams is a UT alumna, having earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology in Knoxville. Since joining UNH in 2001, Williams has held key leadership roles in strategic planning and implementation, institutional accreditation, faculty development and research strategic planning. She leads a sizeable portfolio of faculty development programs that includes the Engaged Scholars Academy, the Research and Engagement Academy, and the Engaged Scholars Writing Team.

2. NIH Makes Historic Deal with Lacks Family over HeLa Cell Line

New York Times Bestseller The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (Skloot, 2010) was read by many UT students, faculty, and staff a couple years ago as part of UT’s Life of the Mind program. The book tells the story of a tissue-culture cell line (HeLa) derived from the cancer cells taken without the knowledge or permission of an African American woman who died in 1951. The cells launched a medical revolution and a multimillion-dollar industry. On August 7, 2013, the NIH brokered a new agreement with the Lacks family over the use of the data collected from these famous cells.

5. Call for Proposals Extended: 2013 Kentucky Engagement Conference

The 2013 Kentucky Engagement Conference will be held Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at Eastern Kentucky University. Presentations may be in either a poster session or an oral/panel session format, and proposals should address one of the following conference tracks: Collaborative Government; Economic & Workforce Development; Education; Environmental Sustainability; or Health, Wellness, and Safety.

6. Register Now: 2013 Outreach and Engagement Staff Workshop

A number of UTK & UTIA folks already plan to attend this workshop, a 1-day pre-conference to the 2013 National Outreach Scholarship Conference at Texas Tech University. This workshop is specially designed for university professionals who, in roles distinct from those of tenure-track faculty, facilitate, manage and direct ongoing projects, programs, services, research and relationships with community partners. 7. Call for Papers: Democratic Practice and Community Development

Editors seek contributions that focus on identifying and critically analyzing the relationship between community development and democratic practice for a special issue of Community Development: The Official Journal of the Community Development Society. This issue seeks to uncover creative tensions and opportunities among diverse perspectives on the theory and practice of community development, and look for examples of community development practice that does, or does not, strengthen the democratic capacity of citizens in communities.

10. PeyBack Foundation: Grants for Programs Serving At-Risk Children

Peyton Manning’s PeyBack Foundation focuses primarily on economically disadvantaged youth. Emphasis is placed on programs that are intended to enrich the lives of disadvantaged youth through activities conducted outside the typical school day (i.e., after-school and summer programming). Grant applicant must be a nonprofit 50(c)3 – if not, there must be a letter from the organization (on their letterhead) on the 501(c) 3 documentation stating the relationship between the applying organization and theirs. Grants of up to $15,000.

11. Knoxville Parks & Recreation Seeks Proposals for Challenge Grants

Grants up to $2,500 for projects associated with public parks or recreation facilities within the City limits. Awards, which must be matched with additional funds or volunteer labor, have been used for playground equipment, benches, water fountains, landscaping and other amenities.

12. American Association for the Advancement of Science Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science

The AAAS Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science, established in 2010, recognizes early-career scientists and engineers who demonstrate excellence in their contribution to public engagement with science activities. A monetary prize of $5,000, a commemorative plaque, complimentary registration to the AAAS Annual Meeting, and reimbursement for reasonable hotel and travel expenses to attend the AAAS Annual Meeting to receive the prize are given to the recipient.

13. Grants available for community-based research at the Smithsonian

Recovering Voices is now accepting applications for the Smithsonian’s Community Research Grants program. The purpose of the Community Research Grant program is to support indigenous communities in their efforts to save, document, and enliven their languages, cultures, and knowledge systems. Grants bring groups of community scholars to the Smithsonian to examine specific objects, specimens, and documents related to their heritage, and engage in a dialogue with Smithsonian staff, in order to recover and revitalize their language and knowledge. Interdisciplinary projects are encouraged. Applicants may request up to $10,000.

14. French-American Foundation: Immigration Journalism Fellowships

Fellowship to provide media professionals of all nationalities and working in all forms of media (web, print, documentary, photography, etc.) with the financial means to produce independent, responsible and challenging work on migration and integration. 2013 Fellows will each receive with up to $10,000 each for their work, to be completed over a 4-6 month period. The Fellowship seeks to support meaningful, visionary stories on under-reported topics with a strong social justice component and with the potential to advance public debate on the issue.

15. Association of Performing Arts Presenters: Cultural Exchange Fund

The Cultural Exchange Fund is a travel subsidy program supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to assist U.S. based presenting professionals and their organizations and companies in building partnerships and collaborations with international touring artists, companies and their collaborators and to experience the work of artists from around the world in its cultural context.

16. Dept. Health & Human Services: Desseminating Patient Centered Outcomes Research to Improve Healthcare Delivery (R18)

The purpose of this FOA is to disseminate and implement existing evidence for improving the quality of health care delivery. Applicants are required to demonstrate the ability and commitment to leverage the capacities of existing broad-based networks of providers and other key stakeholders in their dissemination and implementation activities. 4-8 awards, at a total of $4 million total costs per year for the four year duration of this initiative.

This web-based budget calculator may help build a budget for shared costs, but may be of even greater value for its downloadable “Budgeting for Involvement” document, which provides frameworks, prompts, and planning tools for budgeting those costs most likely to be of interest and use in community-campus partnerships.

20. What is Public Engagement?

“Public engagement” is a term that is widely used in a variety of sectors - from arts and heritage to science policy and local government – but what is it? The UK’s National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement defines public engagement as …”the myriad of ways in which the activity and benefits of higher education and research can be shared with the public.
