Hello, I am not sure that we should be putting all adjuncts in the same basket. There are a significant number of us (though almost certainly a minority), who are Ph.D.s with academic backgrounds who are interested in the values of academe and not just getting the books over the counter, etc. I personally was full-time tenure-track faculty until a family situation made it impossible to continue along that line, I know others who are similar situations or who are retired faculty now teaching part time in their specialty, etc. I also think there is a great deal of value to offering students the real world perspective that other adjuncts (who may hail from the professional world) offer in addition to the sort of things academics offer...but I digress. To say we start from different places may be true, but to paint us all with the same brush is a mistake. And to answer your fourth point, in at least one institution with which I am acquainted the faculty evaluation is required by the union, I think it varies widely.
