The 3-week UTK Summer Teaching Institute is over; but the exciting exploration has only begun for the twenty-four faculty members who joined the Institute to transform their courses with innovative teaching methods and technology. "I am looking forward to the rest of the summer to actually dig in with all the new technologies I've been introduced to by the Summer Teaching Institute," said Victor Ranft on Twitter.

The Office of Information Technology and TennTLC created the intense faculty development experience that included group discussions, workshops on teaching strategies, instructional technologies, an interchange of ideas on instructional theory, and course-specific instructional development assignments.

The Institute culminated in the final session where groups of faculty participants exchanged ideas about their courses. Then each group nominated its "best of the best" to present the transformed course to the entire Institute. Luis Finotti showed his online course, Math 504. Laura Trujillo-Mejia presented her redesigned Spanish 323 class on upper level grammar and composition. Mark DeKay talked about his flipped course for architectural students, where students will watch video lectures before class and then participate in class activities that build concepts needed for projects and develop professional skills. Patrick Biddix demonstrated his Research Design course site. Emma Willcox, from the Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries department, presented her approach to building a capstone course around project-based, profession-oriented student learning.

The Institute's goals support the University's Top 25 objectives for improving student learning and increasing access to courses through alternative modes of instruction.

In version 21 of SPSS, a new feature was added to help estimate the amount of variability in a model's predictions.

To obtain a variability prediction, create a model and save the file; then choose Simulation from the Analyze menu and open the model.

Next, set the parameters of your simulation "plan."

Rather than considering all the variables and making decisions based on data values or the distributions of variables, simply click the Fit All button. The settings will be extracted from your existing data set.

Though his tenure has ended, Will Schleter, Lecturer in Engineering Fundamentals and OIT's 2012-2013 Faculty Fellow<https://oit.utk.edu/instructional/development/fellows/Pages/default.aspx>, exhibits the true Volunteer Spirit by continuing to offer his services in ways that assist faculty in using technology. Schleter, an early and avid proponent of enhancing teaching and learning with technology, has established working relationships with several groups within OIT and he'd like to see more faculty do the same.

The OIT Newton HPC (High Performance Computing) Program has completed summer upgrades of the new General Purpose Graphical Processing Unit (GPGPU) computing cluster. Each of the 36 nodes in the cluster has a Tesla GPGPU card that is used to accelerate research software performance, rather than to display graphics. To help make use of this new cluster, compiler software from Intel, the Portland Group Inc., and NVIDIA is available and supports the use of CUDA, OpenCL, OpenACC, OpenMP, and OpenMPI programming for parallel applications. Total Peak performance of the cluster is 29 Tflop/s with 1.2TB of RAM.
