Dear graduate and undergraduate students,

 

Again I am hearing that email to my [log in to unmask] account is bouncing.  For all I know, email to other faculty may also be bouncing.  I know this is weird, but the problem is very clearly not with my email account, but with the email system students use, called Volmail.  (Faculty use "T-mail.")   There is nothing I can fix because the problem is not with my account.

 

Here is the explanation I received from OIT:

 

Hi Sally,
 
This may be a problem with students who have sent mail to you in the past and Volmail has saved your email address in the auto complete. For an unknown reason, there has been problems using the auto complete in Volmail to send messages. 
 
I suggest you have a student type your email address in the To: field, and when your email address comes up in the auto complete drop down, have them delete it. After the auto complete is deleted, have him or her type your email address, and then send the message. 
 
If this does not work, the student should call the OIT HelpDesk at (865) 974-9900 so we can further assist. We will be open 7 am - 5 pm Friday.

Students: I am aware that this is pain, and that the failure to delivery message really makes it seem like I should be the one to fix it, but I can't.  I ask you to instead please read and follow the instructions above.

 

Another solution (by Matt Valente earlier this month) may also work:  use [log in to unmask]

 

If the problem is with the auto complete, anything you can do to get around that should allow your mail to go through.
