INFORMATION FOR INCOMING STUDENTS
Summer Orientation Sessions are Underway
The first of our 16 two-day orientation sessions kicked-off on Monday, and our staff will welcome over 1,000 new students (and more than 1,200 of their parents and family members) to Big Orange Country this week alone! If you're the parent of an incoming student, welcome to the Tennessee Family and thank you for your membership in the UT Parents Association.
Registered students and parents should have received regular confirmation emails over the past month outlining the requirements for the VOL Aboard online Pre-Orientation module, as well as confirming parking, check-in, and schedule details. If you have not already printed your two-day orientation session parking pass, click here to access it and print it now.
First Year Studies Online Course for Incoming First-Year Students
All incoming students are required to complete First Year Studies (FYS) 100: The Volunteer Connection, which can be accessed online through Blackboard. This course is designed to help your student become familiar with the college environment and adjust to academic life at UT. It also introduces important academic policies and expectations, including the Life of the Mind Program. Students can now access FYS 100 on the Blackboard site.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
Parent Volunteer Opportunities
Each summer, we depend on current members of the Parents Association to greet new parents at first-year student and parent orientation. New parents always enjoy talking with our current Parent Association members. Orientation sessions are already underway, and our staff needs volunteers to help recruit new members at orientation check-in at the University Center (7:15-8:45 AM) and in the University Center during parent lunch (11:30 AM - 1:00 PM). Simply reply to this email for more information on getting involved.
Conversations to Have with Your Student: Creating or Updating a Resume
The summer months offer an ideal opportunity for your student to focus on his or her resume. Having a well-written, nicely formatted resume can truly help your student stand out when he or she applies for internships, part-time employment, or a full-time job after graduation! To get your student started, direct him or her to the Career Services resume writing website for examples and ideas. After your student has a draft of a resume, he or she can call and make an appointment with a Career Consultant to discuss edits and improvements with a staff member. Visit http://career.utk.edu for more information.
Safety Reminders While Studying Abroad
Many students will use the summer months as the perfect opportunity to study abroad. For both parents and students, personal safety is often one of the biggest concerns when studying or traveling abroad. Be sure to clearly share your expectations with your student including how often you would like to communicate, making responsible decisions, and more. UT also offers a 24-hour emergency phone number for students who are studying abroad. The Programs Abroad Office provides other important tips and information on their website.
