Dear GSE Community:

With great pleasure I announce the appointment of Dr. Heidi Julien as the chair and professor in the Department of Library and Information Studies, effective August 15, 2013.

Dr. Heidi Julien will be joining the GSE from the School of Library and Information Studies at The University of Alabama where she is a professor. She has taught at the University of Alberta and Dalhousie University in Canada, and at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Dr. Julien’s research interests focus on information behavior, information literacy, and education for information studies; much of this work has been funded by the Social Sciences and Research Council of Canada. She is particularly interested in everyday information behavior, and the roles that affective variables play in that behavior. As well, she has examined information literacy instructional practices and instructors' experiences of the teaching role through national survey and interview studies. Dr. Julien's scholarship is international in scope; she has collaborated with colleagues in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Sweden, and South Africa, and presented her work at many international venues, including the ISIC (Information Seeking in Context) conference—the premier international meeting focused on information behavior research. Her publications may be found in Journal of the American Society for Information Science & Technology, Information Processing & Management, Journal of Documentation, Information Research, and Library and Information Science Research, among others. She is a past-president of the Canadian Association for Information Science, and former editor of the Canadian Journal of Library and Information Science. She has served on the board of the Association for Library and Information Science Education and chaired SIG USE in the American Society for Information Science & Technology. Currently she serves on the editorial boards of Library & Information Science Research, and Cosmopolitan Civil Societies.

I would like to thank LIS Interim Chair Jianqiang Wang and all of the members of the search committee for their excellent service. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Julien and in welcoming her to this significant leadership role within our GSE community.

Best,

Jaek
