Dear Undergrad Geographers:

The 2013 meeting of the Southeastern Division of the Association of American Geographers (SEDAAG) will take place Nov. 24-26 in Roanoke, Virginia. Unlike many of the other Regional Divisions, the SEDAAG meeting is a nicely sized and refereed conference where faculty and students (including undergraduates) can present papers and posters.

I encourage you to take advantage of this meeting opportunity. It is relatively nearby, far cheaper than AAG, and a great networking opportunity for folks in the Southeast. We have a long history of students and faculty participating, although it would be great to see an even larger UTK presence. Doctoral and MS students can participate in honors paper and poster competitions. The PhD paper prize is $1000!

To access the specifics of the call for papers/posters for the Roanoke meeting, please visit the following hyperlink:

http://sedaag.org/call-for-papers-and-posters/ . The deadline for the submissions for paper presentations is August 23, 2013 and the deadline for the submission of poster presentations is Sept. 6, 2013.

NEW: Please note that the procedure and requirements of submission are quite different than in past years.

First, all submissions will be made through an online submission form (http://sedaag.org/submissions-form/ ). With that submission form, you will be allowed to upload all important documents and submit all contact information in one place without emailing multiple files to the Program Chair/VP.

Second (and this is a major change), paper presenters will no longer be required to submit a formal 8 page paper. Instead, participants are asked to submit a 1000-1500 word document that summarizes your key arguments, questions/objectives, methods/analysis, and results/conclusions. You can think of this as an extended abstract of the paper--not to be confused with the standard 250 word abstract that you will also be asked to submit through the online form.

Third (and this is also a major change), poster presenters are now being asked to submit a low resolution proof of the poster to be presented at the SEDAAG meeting. In previous years, participants submitted an 1-2 page extended abstract describing the plan for the poster along with a sample of graphics/images to be used. In my opinion, this will require poster presenters to put a bit more work on the poster's layout and content at the front end, hence the later deadline on Sept. 6.

Fourth, if you will submitting a paper/poster to the student honors competition, you will need to send your submission both through online form referenced above and to the Chair of the Honors Committee, Chris Badurek ,Appalachian State University ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>).

If you have specific questions about these new requirements and/or the online submission form, please contact the SEDAAG Program Chair/VP: Dr. Susan Walcott, UNC-Greensboro ( [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>)

Thanks,

Derek
