STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

GRAMS offers research opportunities

As part of the Graduate Research Assistantships for Masters Students (GRAMS) program managed by the Center for Intelligent Systems and Machine Learning (CISML)<http://cisml.utk.edu> in the College of Engineering, the Situation Awareness and Visual Analytics team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has funded research opportunities for graduate students with interests/experience in:

  * web-based user interfaces and visualizations
  * information extraction and natural language processing
  *   graph databases
  *   real-time stream processing

The program is designed to allow MS students who are nearing completion of their degree requirements to conclude their studies while working at ORNL. GRAMS targets students who have completed their primary coursework toward the master degree. The assistantship program offers a competitive stipend and typically provides a tuition waver for up to twelve credit hours of thesis work, independent study, and similar work for academic credit that is conducted at the lab.

Interested students should visit the GRAMS website<http://cisml.utk.edu/GRAMS> and submit a GRAMS student form. Students should mention the Stucco Project<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/pdf/stucco_overview.pdf> on their application. Support is available for the rest of the summer, Fall 2013, and Spring 2014. Inquiries about GRAMS should be directed to Julie Knoefel ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) with CISML and specific questions regarding the Stucco Project should be directed to Dr. John Goodall ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) with ORNL/CISML.

Featured co-op student: Lance Powell

[Lance Powell]Our student this week is Lance Powell, pictured at right, a mechanical engineering major who accepted a co-op at Altec Industries Inc., located in Burnsville, North Carolina.

Powell described the department he worked in and what his main responsibilities were.

“I work in the design department," he said. "As design engineers, our goal is to work hard at designing bodies in a timely manner to deliver to our customers. One way to aid this goal is to create and follow design standards throughout our plant. With uniform techniques, things can be completed faster. We also constantly look for ways to improve our designs with the help of the quality and manufacturing departments. We implement a vast amount of engineering change orders per week in order to make sure the bodies leaving our plant are maximized in quality and safety. We also participate in cost savings events and rapid continual improvement events as well to increase efficiency in production, reduce production costs, and increase quality of designs.”

The most valuable benefit Lance received during his co-op assignment was the work experience.

"It was important for three reasons," said Powell. "It made me more marketable after college, gave me motivation and confirmation to stay in school and become an engineer, and it helped me financially.”

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu<http://www.coop.utk.edu>, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work–In Their Own Words.” For information on engineering co-op and internships, contact [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> or 865-974-5323.
