ENGAGEMENT NEWS

1.      UT’s Collaboration with Appalachian Teaching Project Enters 13th Year

UT’s Appalachian Teaching Project (ATP), directed by Dr. Tim Ezzell, is among most sustained student engagement/service learning initiatives on the Knoxville campus. The ATP is a partnership of 15 colleges and universities and the Appalachian Regional Commission, a Federal agency established by an act of Congress in 1965.  The project gives college students the opportunity to engage directly with Appalachian communities in research projects that address endemic challenges facing those communities. Student projects are presented at a conference held each year in Washington, D.C. UT’s 2013-14 project will examine the potential economic impact and social consequences of new and emerging technologies on small rural communities. Using Ducktown, Tennessee (pop. 427) as a case study, students will examine a wide range of issues and policy topics, including workforce development, infrastructure, local perceptions, and local capacity.

GRAD’s  K-16 approach as the premier nationally recognized college/career program focuses on: (1) college/career access and success; (2) social services support, (3) family, neighborhood & community engagement, and (4) intentional support for disadvantaged students.

10.  Confessions of a Do-Gooder Who Starved an Organization “Not experienced enough to know better, I bought the hype: that to be truly altruistic and efficient, we needed to operate at the highest possible levels of self-sacrifice… Overhead is not dirty because it represents inefficiency, waste, and greed; it is dirty because of the powerful myth it has promulgated. That myth – the one that equates “low” overhead with high performance and “high” overhead with greed and irresponsibility – leads to a very dangerous and unsustainable outcome.”

12.  Focus Group Interviewing 101

(Hat-tip CCPH)  Focus group interviewing is widely used by academic and applied researchers. Given the popularity and strengths of this method, it is surprising how rarely focus group interviewing is taught in the undergraduate classroom. This article, Teaching Focus Group Interviewing: Benefits and Challenges, describes how to integrate a complete research project with student-led focus groups into a single semester course.

13.  Learn More: STEM High Schools Built on More Than Science and Math

(U.S. News & World Report, June 20, 2013)  STEM high schools, such as Knoxville’s L&N Academy, are not built on science, technology, engineering and math courses, said Aimee Kennedy, chief academic officer of Metro Early College High School in Ohio. "If that's all it took to be considered a STEM school, any school in the country could do it," Kennedy said Wednesday during a panel discussion at the 2013 U.S. News STEM Solutions conference in Austin.  Instead, these niche schools are built on project-based learning, critical thinking and collaboration - a model that can be replicated at schools across the country, according to STEM school leaders.
