175th Anniversary

Celebrate the 175th anniversary of engineering at the University of Tennessee with us. Please share your memories of UT and your engineering courses or professors here. The 175th Anniversary Gala will be on Friday October 4th, along with the John D. Tickle Engineering Building Dedication, and open house and tours of the engineering campus and a networking lunch with current engineering students.

We were pleased to celebrate the spring graduation with over 280 engineering graduates participating in the ceremony on May 8, 2013. With over 2,600 friends and family in attendance, the Arena was filled. Dwight Hutchins (BS/Chemical '86), the Global Managing Director of Accenture's Health and Public Service Strategy, joined students and faculty as the commencement speaker. (read more)

Kin Huntsman and Jimmy Cheek


Ken Huntsman (MS/CS '77), co-founder of AOL, retired in 2007 as an "AOL Fellow." On April 16, Huntsman came back to the University of Tennessee to receive the UT Accomplished Alumni Award for 2013 and present Creativity "the Internet on Training Wheels" to Dr. Lee Martin's Engineering Entrepreneurship class. Dr. John A. Garrison (BS/Comp Engr '04) is the fourth generation of his family to attend the University of Tennessee. Since the 1800s, the Garrisons have been at UT and their connection remains strong. (read more)

As a group of premier students in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), the Min Kao Scholars seek to improve their education daily. On March 8, 2013, this academic year's scholars had the opportunity to travel to Garmin International, Inc. in Oalthe, Kansas, cofounded by Dr. Min Kao himself. (read more)

Professors Create Code that Turns Large-Scale Data into Art

How does a computer view the human world—say, the human genome or literary works such as Herman Melville's Moby Dick?


Two UT professors have provided some insight, thanks to a code they've created that allows the computer to transform large-scale data and information into digital images—compressed pictures composed of colorful lines. (read more)

Noitom LTD, cofounded by Dr. Han Lin (PhD/CE '03) in 2010, seeks to revolutionize the entire motion capture business. A company based in Beijing, China, Noitom develops highly accurate and user-friendly inertial motion capture systems that allow individuals to record and digitize complex body motions anywhere and anytime. Dr. Bradley I. Grinstead


Dr. Brad Grinstead (PhD/EE '08) was not always a UT Vol. Starting out in Texas, it was his interest in image processing and computer vision that drew him to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, for his PhD research and he has not regretted it since. (read more)
