Library Director-Faulkner & Van Buren Counties (Conway, AR)

Be a vital contributor to a vital area--the Central Gateway to the Arkansas Ozarks! The Board of Trustees of The Public Libraries of Faulkner & Van Buren Counties (headquartered in Conway, AR) seeks an innovative, collaborative, and enthusiastic leader to serve as its next Library Director. The new Director will lead a system of eight public libraries serving two counties with a combined population of 133,000. The System, governed by a ten-member regional library board with equal representation from each county, circulates 446,696 items annually, and has a $1.7 million budget and a staff of twenty-five (25) FTE .

This stunning Central Arkansas area has something for everyone. Located 30 miles from Little Rock, Conway, “The City of Colleges,” is the home of two colleges, one university and a premier medical center. In addition to its natural beauty and many recreational outdoor amenities (Lake Conway hosts the annual Arkansas Masters sport fishing tournament), the region offers the Conway Symphony Orchestra and the Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre. Responsibilities: Major responsibilities include providing strategic direction to member libraries for services, collections, and technologies; working with the Board to formulate and implement sound library policy; working collaboratively with member libraries as the liaison to the local communities; participating in state library-related activities; and supervising and working effectively with system and member library staff. Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA–accredited school and a minimum of five years’ progressively responsible public library or equivalent experience. Desirable abilities include proven public library leadership with a minimum of four years of public library management experience; strategic thinking and planning; ability to work well with staff, local and state officials, and community stakeholders; an understanding of emerging library technologies including social media; and experience reporting to a governing board. The successful candidate will reside in Faulkner County.

Compensation: The hiring salary range is $55,000-65,000 (placement being dependent on experience and qualifications) with an attractive benefits package.

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

• Growing the Digital Library: prepare and coordinate the import of book chapters, journal articles, and business cases into the Digital Library, including metadata preparation, selection extraction, and digital inventory management

 

• Reference Service: recommend high quality, relevant readings to professors who require librarian expertise; provide one-on-one instructional assistance to users

 

• Project Management: coordinate multiple ongoing collection projects across several teams; accurately plan and communicate milestones to technology, marketing, and acquisitions

 

• User Experience Management: collaborate with the technology group to identify improvements to various library features and functions, including search and navigation, discoverability, previewing materials, and reading lists

 

Desired Skills & Experience

QUALIFICATIONS

 

• MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program; expertise in digital libraries, information architecture, or library systems preferred

• 3+ years experience in a library or information management role

• Experience delivering reference services to a wide variety of patrons

• Incredible organizational habits; highly-polished writing and speaking skills; marketing savvy; ability to use and manipulate data to glean insights into content use and information trends

• Thorough understanding of metadata standards such as Dublin Core, EAD, MODS, METS or ONIX

• Extremely strong Excel and Acrobat skills--you live and breathe for new macros and automation tricks to increase efficiency

• Comfortable using tools like text editors and command line interfaces to manipulate files, and occasionally edit scripts and XML records

• Experience with digital library systems (ContentDM, Greenstone, DSpace, etc.), and/or enterprise document management systems (Nuxeo, Alfresco, Sharepoint, etc.)

• Demonstrated ability to calculate costs and time investment on a variety of short to medium-term projects

In this position, you will own all aspects of the our company’s Digital Library (http://www.universityreaders.com/library), including content import and metadata management, virtual reference services, project management and publisher communication, improvements to the professor experience, and collaborating closely with technology, sales, and marketing teams to promote and enhance the use of the library by our professor clients.

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

• Growing the Digital Library: prepare and coordinate the import of book chapters, journal articles, and business cases into the Digital Library, including metadata preparation, selection extraction, and digital inventory management

 

• Reference Service: recommend high quality, relevant readings to professors who require librarian expertise; provide one-on-one instructional assistance to users

 

• Project Management: coordinate multiple ongoing collection projects across several teams; accurately plan and communicate milestones to technology, marketing, and acquisitions

 

• User Experience Management: collaborate with the technology group to identify improvements to various library features and functions, including search and navigation, discoverability, previewing materials, and reading lists

QUALIFICATIONS

 

• MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program; expertise in digital libraries, information architecture, or library systems preferred

• 3+ years experience in a library or information management role

• Experience delivering reference services to a wide variety of patrons

• Incredible organizational habits; highly-polished writing and speaking skills; marketing savvy; ability to use and manipulate data to glean insights into content use and information trends

The Marketing Manager, Library Products is responsible for developing and implementing product marketing and communication plans for flagship and new library products and solutions. SPECIAL COLLECTIONS LIBRARIAN

 

Position Description: Reporting to the Head, Special Collections & University Archives Department, the Special Collections Librarian has curatorial, instruction, and outreach responsibility for map collections and supports a broad range of departmental initiatives.

 

General responsibilities include:

·         Developing and managing print and manuscript map collections, sensitively building upon existing strengths and exploring new areas for development.

·         Coordinating instruction sessions utilizing map collections, developing public programming, and integrating the history of cartography into departmental activities.

·         Setting priorities for map collection processing and cataloging.

·         Collaborating with colleagues working in areas of collection development, archival and manuscript processing, rare books cataloging, preservation, and digitization.

·         Providing reference services and supporting day-to-day operations, which may include some supervision of staff.

·         Developing donor and dealer relationships, particularly with map collectors, and cultivating campus and community partners.

·         Participating in Libraries’ initiatives outside of Special Collections & University Archives by serving on Libraries’ and campus committees and contributing to other relevant activities and events.

·         Maintaining a course of personal professional development through active participation in rare book, manuscript, and archives professional associations or other professional activities external to the Libraries.

  • Participate in the planning and implementation of statewide and regional Arts and Cultural Heritage Funding Library Legacy activities
  • Assist with advocacy efforts at the local, state and national levels
  • Support member library annual report submission and prepare SELCO/SELS annual reports
  • Plan and execute the annual children’s and adult reading programs
  • Apply for and administer grants in the manner prescribed by the funding sources
  • Manage SELCO’s special collections
  • Foster statewide library relationships and regional cooperative ventures
  • Possess an accredited MLS or School Library Media Specialist degree
  • Possess excellent computer skills and experience using electronic information resources and relevant software applications; work experience in a SirsiDynix Horizon environment desirable
  • Possess an ability to organize and prioritize work projects, as well as implement and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures necessary for providing quality service
  • Demonstrate and practice effective knowledge management skills
