Helping Students Learn with Interactive Lectures.

Check out the latest Faculty Spotlight! Dr. Sally Harris, a senior lecturer in the English department, shares her story of becoming a power-user of OIT resources to improve her students’ learning experiences.

Dr. Harris uses Blackboard Learn to post lectures and assignments, assess students’ comprehension, post grades, and facilitate communication with her students. Participation in the OIT Faculty First grant helped Dr. Harris create interactive, online lectures with embedded self-paced quizzes. As a result, “students could assimilate the material much better, than just … sitting back and reading it.”

Make it a point to visit our previous Faculty Spotlights where faculty members generously share experiences and ideas that may work for you, too!

Three departments of the University of Tennessee are working together to get it started: the Office of Information Technology, the National Institute for Computational Science’s Remote Data Analysis and Visualization (RDAV) group and the Department of Statistics, Operations, and Management Science. The latter’s Business Analytics program was recently ranked among the top 20 comparable departments in the U.S. People can join the R Users Group at KRUG.

Take an iPad for a Test-Drive
Have you had a chance to take an iPad on a test-drive? If not, OIT is loaning iPads to faculty for up to 4 weeks, beginning with the mini-term. During this time, you can explore the device and determine how it could support your teaching/learning experiences.

Faculty may also borrow up to 20 iPads for students’ use in class. These iPads are loaned for up to 4 weeks (or 1st or 2nd summer session). For more information, go to the iPad Loan Program webpage.

In addition to offering loaner iPads, OIT offers two levels of iPad training for faculty. Prior to requesting a loaner iPad, you are encouraged to sign up for the class that will meet your needs. You can view a list of dates and times, as well as register for Mobile Learning (iPad) training, on the OIT site. For additional training or a consult, please contact the OIT HelpDesk at 865-974-9900 or complete the online form.

OIT provides a variety of software for research. There are four ways UT faculty, staff and students can use this software: on a desktop computer, on OIT Computer Labs machines, on the high performance Newton Linux cluster, or from the Citrix Server, Apps@UT.

Available software (free or fee-based) can be installed on a personal or an institutional computer that is being used for research. For a comprehensive listing of available software, see OIT’s Software Purchases. The OIT computer labs provide PCs and Macs running a more extensive selection of software that can be used for research. For a list of available software and for lab information, see Computer Labs.

The Apps@UT system allows you to you run software, using a web browser, without having the software installed on your own computer. Usage is free for students, faculty and UTK staff. For important information about using this server, see [log in to unmask]"> How to Use Apps@UT.

For more information about available research software, or to schedule an appointment with a Research Support consultant, call the OIT HelpDesk at 974-9900.

Powerful Tool in Your Toolkit
For some time, podcasts and streaming video have been widely used in eLearning. More recently, several unique benefits have been associated with PowerPoint with Voiceover, including its portability, repeatability, and, when well-designed, its ability to engage learners and enrich the learning experience.

OIT’s Online Instructor Toolkit provides assistance in all phases of course design and development. It offers specific instruction on preparing PowerPoint with Voiceover, or you may request development help through OIT.

When forecasting data, many techniques are available to help improve accuracy. These techniques extend well beyond looking at trends and taking simple moving averages. They are statistical methods within the field of time series analysis, and can be utilized to create more effective forecasting models.

Time series forecasting involves developing a model from past observations to better predict future data values. When generating time series forecasts, it is important to understand the underlying assumptions behind the models to help ensure that forecasts are reliable and that they appropriately address underlying patterns within data.

OIT’s Research Computing Support group can now help you perform time series forecasts that create accurate and reliable results. For free assistance, contact the OIT HelpDesk at 974-9900 or stop by our walk-in area in Greve 517. View our walk-in support schedule.

Clicker Upgrade
UTK’s Clicker Technology Program will upgrade to TurningPoint 5 beginning with the Summer 2013 mini-term. Faculty using clicker technology in courses offered during the mini-term and summer can begin testing on bblearn.utk.edu on May 1. All other clicker technology faculty users can begin testing the TurningPoint 5 software with Blackboard at online.utk.edu beginning June 15.

Future Training
Turning Technologies will provide two on-campus training sessions on Wednesday, May 15, from 9:00 am-12:00 pm and 1:00-4:00 pm. Future training sessions will be provided throughout the summer by OIT and Turning Technologies staff. Check the OIT workshop calendar to view dates and times and to register for all classes.

Roundtable Luncheon
Our end-of-semester Clicker Roundtable Luncheon, with Turning Technologies, was held on Tuesday, April 16, 2013. Will Schleter, Turning Technologies Distinguished Educator and UTK Engineering Fundamentals Lecturer, shared experiences of using the new TurningPoint 5 software in a large general education course. Also, in preparation for the upcoming campus-wide upgrade to the new software, faculty participated in either a morning or afternoon training session.

What it Means for Faculty/Staff:
Beginning May 21st, all Microsoft Live ID accounts that are affiliated with your UTK Email address will be upgraded to Office 365 accounts. This account primarily provides staff and faculty access to IT Academy.

The most significant change for staff and faculty accounts will be Microsoft splitting the Microsoft Live ID service into 2 separate accounts, an Office 365 account (used to access IT Academy), and a personal account for consumer services, such as SkyDrive. After the change, your personal Microsoft account password will no longer sync with your NetID password.

If you have any questions, please contact the OIT HelpDesk at (865) 974-9900 or at http://help.utk.edu.
