MEMBER BENEFIT SPOTLIGHT

Local Hotel Discounts

As a reminder, the Parents Association has partnered with thirteen local hotels to offer members exclusive discounts on accommodations in Knoxville. There are four properties in the downtown area, eight in west Knoxville, and one location at the airport. Often, the hotel discount over a single weekend can pay for the cost of an annual membership. For all parents of incoming students who will be attending Orientation this summer, this is a great time to utilize your discount. You will need your Member ID to take advantage of the hotel discounts.

Orientation is Almost Here

Summer orientation sessions begin next week (and last through mid-July) for all first-year students entering UT this fall. If your student is attending orientation, encourage him or her to attend all sessions for valuable information about the university and their first year on campus. As a parent, it is also important that you attend all sessions to become more familiar and comfortable with the university. There will be parking available for every orientation session. Conversations to Have with Your Student this Summer:
Setting & Achieving Goals

Summer break is an excellent time to consider discussing a variety of topics with your student to prepare him or her for next fall and beyond. Conversations about degree progression, internships and practical experience, and even post-graduation plans are all critical to your student's success. This summer, Parents Association weekly emails will highlight some helpful conversation tips.

Setting and achieving attainable goals is key to being successful in college. Make sure you talk to your student about the things he or she wants to accomplish, both in the short-term and long-term. Encourage your student to set specific, measurable, short-term goals so he or she knows when when and how to reach them.

Student Summer Volunteer Opportunities

Many students are busy this summer with internships or summer school. Encourage your student to include volunteering as a part of his or her summer plans. Volunteering and community service is a great way to serve the local community, stay active, and a great attribute to include on a resume. A proven commitment to serving others could be just the thing that sets your student apart from others when applying for jobs and campus leadership positions.
