Drexel University’s iSchool Introduces New Bachelor’s Degree in Informatics

PHILADELPHIA (May 13, 2013)--This month, Drexel University’s iSchool, College of Information Science and Technology announced a new Bachelor of Science in Informatics (BSI) to be offered in its fall 2013 undergraduate curriculum.

The BSI degree joins the iSchool’s existing undergraduate degree programs in Information Systems, Information Technology, Software Engineering, in addition to accelerated degrees (Master’s, JD and MBA).

The BSI program prepares graduates to join data science teams that create novel information products, develop new insights about people's behavior, and solve problems that require large and disparate datasets, in domains such as health care, finance, research and development, and business operations.

“As Big Data grows, so does the need for people able to analyze and provide insight into data produced by areas such as commerce, science, and health care. At today’s data tipping point, the iSchool is poised to answer these needs through its BSI program, as developed by our multidisciplinary faculty,” says iSchool Dean David Fenske.

The program features innovative coursework in data mining, information retrieval, visual analytics, social media trend spotting, human computer interaction, and information policy.

Students in the BSI program are required to participate in Drexel Co-op—one of the oldest and most expansive university co-operative education programs in the world—where students can gain up to 18 months of work experience by graduation.
