Registration is now available for the May 15 Talking Freight Seminar on State Freight Advisory Committees. Date/Time: May 15, 2013, 2013 1:00 - 2:30 pm EDT Registration: http://www.ops.fhwa.dot.gov/freight/fpd/talking_freight/index.htm Description One of the freight provisions in Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) transportation legislation addresses State Freight Advisory Committees. States are encouraged "to establish a freight advisory committee consisting of a representative cross-section of public and private sector freight stakeholders, including representatives of ports, shippers, carriers, freight-related associations, the freight industry workforce, the transportation department of the State, and local governments" (MAP-21 Section 1117(a)). Many states are in the process of creating new freight advisory committees, but some states have already established committees, enabling public and private transportation stakeholders to work together to identify, understand, and address freight transportation needs in their states. This webinar will provide general information about the MAP-21 State Freight Advisory Committee guidance, general benefits of forming State Freight Advisory Committees, and specific insights from public sector and private freight company members of an existing State Freight Advisory Committee about the opportunities and challenges associated with these committees. * State Freight Advisory Committees - general benefits overview: This presentation will provide a brief general overview of why State Freight Advisory Committees are important and beneficial for state Departments of Transportation and other freight-focused, public sector transportation professionals. * State Freight Advisory Committees - MAP-21 provisions overview: This presentation will provide a brief overview of the MAP-21 State Freight Advisory Committee guidance. The presentation will include discussion about the types of groups that can and should be part of the advisory committees. * Maryland Freight Advisory Committee - state perspective: This presentation will provide information about the past, present, and future activities of the Maryland Freight Advisory Committee. Background about how and why the committee was formed and what groups participate in the committee will be discussed. * Maryland Freight Advisory Committee - private business perspective: This presentation will provide information about a private company's involvement in Maryland's State Freight Advisory Committee, including the reasons and benefits of involvement and lessons learned from involvement in the advisory committee.
