The Wayne State University School of Library and Information Science held its Annual Recognition Ceremony and reception on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at the university’s McGregor Memorial Conference Center.  This ceremony honored the School’s graduates, scholarship and award winners, and the myriad contributions of the School’s faculty, donors and supporters.  Cecile Bosshard, MLIS 2012, received the Patricia B. Knapp Award, given each year to the graduating student who has demonstrated a high level of scholarship and shows promise of success in a career in library and information science.  Cathleen Russ, Director of the Troy (Michigan) Public Library, was honored as the School’s Distinguished Alumna for 2013.  Ms. Russ led a successful effort over multiple years to keep the Troy Public Library open.

As testament to the growing proportion of the School’s online student population, the ceremony was streamed live.  Since starting its fully online MLIS option in 2008, the proportion of non-Michigan students has risen from less than 1 percent of the School’s student population to over 33% today.  Emphasizing the School's reputation for offering an MLIS education that is both affordable and accessible, the event highlighted that, along with the support of the Graduate School, SLIS had awarded over $200,000 in scholarships to new and continuing students this year.
