San Jose Gateway PhD Program Celebrates Latest Graduates

Two students recently completed the innovative San Jose Gateway PhD program, a research-focused doctoral program offered through a partnership between the nationally ranked San Jose State University School of Library and Information Science (SJSU SLIS) and Queensland University of Technology (QUT), one of Australia’s top research institutions. The program prepares students for research, faculty, and leadership positions in the field of library and information science.

Virginia Tucker, a full-time lecturer at SJSU SLIS, successfully completed the international doctoral program in February 2013. The strengths of both the SJSU SLIS and QUT programs made for an “exceptional experience,” Tucker said. “It was the best of two research worlds.”

Tina Inzerilla, who earned a Master of Library and Information Science at SJSU SLIS in 2005, received her doctorate through the program in January 2013. An instructional and reference librarian at a community college in California, Inzerilla’s future plans include publishing articles and possibly a book based on her dissertation.

The San Jose Gateway PhD program began accepting doctoral students in 2008, and the first three students completed the program in 2012. Using a primarily online model, the program emphasizes original research from the start, with students receiving guidance and one-on-one mentoring from award-winning faculty based on two continents.
