The Information Institute, a professional development resource at UT
Austin’s School of Information, offers seven new courses this spring and
summer for information professionals and others whose work entails the
management or use of information:
 
Putting Data to Work in Your Organization: Big Data, Data Science, and
Strategic Thinking for the New Web, May 15-17
In this 2.5-day seminar with UT professor Megan Winget, you will come to
understand what Big Data is, what cutting-edge applications exist, how to
think strategically about Big Data projects, how to hire the right people,
and how to address cultural and technical challenges.
 
User-Experience Design for Work, Home, Play, and On the Way: Workshop for
User-Experience (UX) Managers, Designers, and Software Engineers, May 22-24
Recently tasked with getting new products/services out the door with the
latest in social media, mobile, and information visualization? Not sure what
do next? This 2.5-day workshop with master designer Aaron Marcus will guide
you through user-centered design, providing insights about managing projects
and people, with resources to get you up and running immediately. 
 
TOPSIGHT: Discovering how information flows in your organization (Part 1),
May 25
Topsight—understanding the big picture—is hard to achieve in organizations.
There’s too much going on, too many moving pieces. But without topsight, you
have a hard time figuring out how information circulates, where it gets
stuck, and how you can get it unstuck. In this half-day workshop with UT
professor Clay Spinuzzi, you’ll learn how to gather the information you need

Understanding Cultural Presence in the Workplace: The Mâtauranga Mâori
Workshop, June 19 
In our workplaces we are called on to collaborate with colleagues and serve
patrons with wide-ranging cultural affiliations. How do we truly work with
members of other cultural communities in ways that are respectful? Join this
half-day workshop with UT professor Loriene Roy and Anahera  Morehu, Library
Manager Mâori and Pasifika Services at the University of Auckland Library,
to find out.
 
TOPSIGHT: Analyzing and fixing how information flows in your
organization(Part 2), June 22
If you've examined how your organization works in practice—not just how it's
supposed to work—you’ve probably seen a lot of surprising issues. Hacks and
innovations. Problems where there shouldn't be problems. Disagreements and
miscommunications in the most unlikely places. Learn how to sort out and fix
these problems in this half-day workshop with UT professor Clay Spinuzzi.

Managing Projects and People: A Workshop for New Managers of Information
Professionals, June 24-26
Recently promoted to manager? Not sure what do next? Hoping everyone just
works together well? This 2.5-day workshop with UT professor Diane Bailey
and management consultant Julie Rennecker will guide you through the basics
of how to manage projects and people, with resources to get you up and
running immediately. 
 
Doing Business with Open Source, July 12-14
Open source communities provide real options for corporations seeking to
improve systems design, development, and support. Yet they function quite
differently than working with other sources of software, at best innovative,
cost effective and fun, at worst ornery, confusing and unreliable. Take this
2.5-day workshop with UT professor James Howison and University of Nebraska
professor Matt Germonprez to learn how to put open source to work for your
organization.
