Announcing Online Instructor Toolkit


Resources to take your course online
Creating a quality online course requires careful planning and considerable time and effort as compared to a traditional lecture-based class. To assist prospective online instructors, OIT has developed a comprehensive Online Instructor Toolkit.

Both novice and experienced online instructors will find the Toolkit full of valuable information: step-by-step instructions on developing and teaching an online course; useful web links and handouts; and guides for specific software used to create digital content, engage students, and assess student learning online.

ITCoP to Highlight Faculty First Grant


Faculty, staff, and GTAs experienced a great demo and discussion pertaining to iPad apps for teaching and learning at the March IT Community of Practice meeting. Dr. Joanne Logan, Biosystems Engineering and Soil Sciences, demonstrated classroom uses for Nearpod and Doceri, and Dr. Dick Bennett, Engineering Fundamentals, shared OneNote as others livened the discussion with various app uses and inquiries.

April's meeting will highlight OIT’s Faculty First Grant as past recipients briefly share their projects’ impact on Teaching and Learning. The Faculty First Grant Program is a partnership between a faculty member and OIT in the design and development of instructional materials to reshape an existing course or course component. Presenters will be listed on the ITCoP website in early April. The meeting will be held Thursday, April 25, from 11:30 am-12:30 pm in the Practice Presentation Room in Commons North (220E), located in Hodges Library. Bring your lunch and join the discussion and demo! OIT will provide coffee and something sweet; looking forward to seeing you there!


OIT Launches iPad Loaner Program


​OIT will launch an iPad loaner program beginning with the mini-term. Faculty members may borrow an iPad for themselves for up to 4 weeks to explore the device and determine how it can support classroom teaching/learning experiences. Faculty may also borrow up to 20 iPads, for students to use in their classes, for up to 4 weeks (or 1st or 2nd summer session). In addition to the Loan Program, OIT offers two levels of iPad training. You are encouraged to sign up for the class that will meet your needs prior to requesting loaner iPads. You can view a list of dates and times, as well as register, on the OIT website under "Productivity Tools for Instruction" click "Introduction to the iPad" or "Mobile Technology for the Classroom". ATLAS.ti Site License Available


ATLAS.ti 7, developed by Scientific Software Development GmbH, is a software package that assists in qualitative data analysis. You can also use ATLAS.ti in conjunction with Microsoft Office Excel and SPSS for quantitative analysis of coding and variables. The logical organization of ATLAS.ti’s interactive interface enables students to easily find the options they need to organize and navigate data for dissertations.

One of ATLAS.ti's strengths is its ability to handle a variety of data types, such as rich text, images, audio, and video files.

A site license is now available for ATLAS.ti. Students, faculty, and staff at all University of Tennessee campuses can download the software. Click here to download software.

ATLAS.ti is also available for use on the server at Apps@UT.


2013 Summer Teaching Institute


OIT and the Tenn TLC will partner to facilitate the Summer Teaching Institute, which is sponsored by the Provost’s Office. Twenty-six faculty participants representing 15 departments have been selected for this year’s Summer Teaching Institute. The participants will receive authentic, hands-on learning experience and guidance to redesign and develop exemplary courses. These courses will be in one of the following three formats:

ONLINE: A course that is offered totally online in an engaging, interactive format.

BLENDED: A course that uses online technologies to replace a subset of face-to-face sessions (for example, one session a week is online and the others are face-to-face). The online time is instructor-designed and facilitated, with interaction between instructor and student, and student-to-student.

FLIPPED: A course that uses a pedagogical model in which the typical lecture and homework elements are reversed. Lecture/content material is presented in an engaging online format so that class time can be spent on problem-solving, discussion, and group activities that produce higher levels of learning.

This year’s Summer Teaching Institute will be held from June 4 through June 21.




OIT Announces Faculty Fellows


OIT is pleased to announce Dr. Elizabeth Hendrickson and Dr. John Koontz as Faculty Fellows for the 2013-2014 academic year. Both will work primarily with the OIT’s Instructional Development and Training group. They will spend approximately 10 hours a week, during the upcoming academic year, on instructional technology projects to advance exemplary teaching and enrich the experience of students in their colleges and throughout the campus. We look forward to collaborating with them!

Dr. Elizabeth Hendrickson, Assistant Professor,
School of Journalism and Electronic Media
Dr. Hendrickson’s research interests include collaboration and communication in virtual newsrooms. A primary focus during her Faculty Fellow tenure will be the creation of a user-friendly process for apps development.

Dr. John Koontz, Professor,
Biochemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology

Dr. Koontz has utilized OIT’s services for many years to incorporate technology into his teaching. Notable achievements include facilitating synchronous online courses, creating recorded lectures, and enhancing classroom engagement via clicker technology. His Faculty Fellow interests include mastering the creation and editing of course videos for pre-class delivery and as additional study resources in online and blended learning environments. Dr. Koontz is also interested in sharing his technology integrations with UTK faculty.

ChemBioDraw 13 on Apps Server


The ChemBioDraw® Ultra 13.0 suite provides scientists with an up-to date-collection of scientifically intelligent applications for chemical structure drawing and analysis. These applications are combined with customizable drawing tools for common pathway diagrams, as well as for biological and biochemical structures.

Currently, ChemBioDraw is free for installation on personal computers to faculty, staff and students at the University of Tennessee Knoxville campus. Instructions for obtaining, installing and activating current and older versions of ChemBioDraw can be downloaded from OIT Software Distribution by logging in and clicking the vendor, “Cambridgesoft”, then clicking ”ChemBioDraw ultra 13.0 Installation Instructions”.

If you prefer to work "in the cloud" rather than downloading the software. Just go to Apps@UTK and log in with your UT NetID and password.  


UTK’s Clicker Technology Program


Upgrade News
UTK’s Clicker Technology Program will upgrade to TurningPoint 5 beginning with the Summer 2013 mini-term. Faculty using clicker technology in courses offered mini-term and summer can begin testing on bblearn.utk.edu on May 1, 2013. All other clicker technology faculty users can begin testing the TurningPoint 5 software with Blackboard at online.utk.edu beginning June 15, 2013.

Upcoming Training
Turning Technologies will provide on campus training sessions Tuesday, April 16, 2013, from 9:00-11:30am and 1:00-3:30pm. Turning Technologies will also provide training on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, from 9:00 am-12:00 pm and 1:00-4:00 pm. In preparation for the fall, additional sessions will be provided throughout the summer by OIT and Turning Technologies staff. Check the OIT workshop calendar to view additional dates and times and to register for all classes.

Clicker Roundtable
Our end-of-semester Clicker Roundtable with Turning Technologies will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2013, with a luncheon presentation from 11:45am-12:45pm in the Carolyn P. Brown University Center, Room 226.

Blackboard Mobile™ Learn


Now available for free!
Blackboard MobileLearn is now available for free to all UTK students, faculty, and staff. The site license was purchased by the UTK Technology Fee at the request of the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Technology Advisory Board (TAB). Everyone at UTK can now access and contribute to their courses wherever and whenever desired.

With an elegant and intuitive design specific for each mobile platform, students can check grades and assignments, view documents, create threaded discussion posts, comment on blogs and journals, upload content and view documents, and more.
