EcoCAR 2 powers on to next phase of competition

After receiving the keys to a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu less than a year ago, students on the UT EcoCAR 2 team have completely redesigned it to make it more eco-friendly. Now, their hard work will be tested against other teams across North America in the second phase matchup.

The graduate and undergraduate students on the team are competing in a three-year collegiate engineering competition called EcoCAR 2, established by the US Department of Energy and General Motors. For more about UT's team, visit http://ecocar2.utk.edu.

A send-off media event for the vehicle will be at 9:00 a.m. Monday, April 29, on the top floor of the Eleventh Street Parking Garage, on the corner of 11th Street and Cumberland Avenue. Parking is available in the garage.

Penumadu and Everetts at ESS
From left, Dr. Dayakar Penumadu visits with recent COE graduate Dr. Michelle Everett and her husband Chris Everett in Lund, Sweden, on April 20, 2013.

Penumadu presents invited lecture at ESS, visits recent COE alumnus

Dr. Dayakar Penumadu, the Fred Peebles Professor and head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, visited the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, earlier this week to present an invited lecture on the "Accomplishments and Future Needs for Energy Selective Neutron Imaging Considering Diffraction Contrast," at the Fifth NEUtron WAVElength Dependent Imaging Workshop (NEUWAVE-5) 2013. He was joined by his PhD student Robin Woracek.

While in Sweden, Penumadu met with Dr. Michelle Everett, a recent NSF IGERT trainee who completed her PhD studies in March in the Department Materials Science and Engineering at UT. Everett now works at the European Spallation Source as a Laboratory Manager. She will operate the on-site scientific laboratories and organize the development of support facilities at ESS for neutron science in parallel with those for neutron technologies.

Everett's PhD advisor at UT was Dr. Claudia Rawn and the principal investigator for the multi-disciplinary NSF IGERT grant is Dr. David Keffer. The project also received support from the Sustainable Energy Education and Research Center (SEERC)

SHPE volunteers at Centro Hispano

Members of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) UT Student Chapter volunteered to paint classrooms on Saturday, April 20, at the Centro Hispano (Hispanic Center), 2455 Sutherland Avenue in Knoxville. The volunteers, mostly engineering students, attended this activity as part of a community service mission.

The organization is committed to tailoring future leaders that, in addition to becoming outstanding engineers, are poised to make a positive difference in the community. At this center, English writing and speaking classes and GED preparation are provided. It also features a computer lab for participants to use free of charge. SHPE plans to develop a close partnership with this center.

The chapter is also planning to visit West High School and L&N Stem Academy in the fall of 2013 to give talks about different engineering tracks that can be achieved at UT. SHPE hopes to enhance interest and recruit minorities from local high schools for the College of Engineering at UT.

For more information, visit the SHPE Facebook page at www.facebook.com/UTKSHPE.

Featured co-op student: David D. Haworth

David HaworthOur student this week is David D. Haworth, pictured at right. Haworth is a mechanical engineering major who accepted a co-op at John Deere Power Products in Greeneville, Tennessee. David describes the department he worked in and what his main responsibilities were.

"I worked in the engineering department," he said. "I was assigned projects by my supervisor. The project topics covered a wide range of plant operations. I mostly dealt with layouts and computer programs that gathered and analyzed data to help the manufacturing lines run more efficiently."

Haworth felt that the most valuable benefit received during his co-op assignment was experience dealing with manufacturing processes.

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work–In Their Own Words.” For information on engineering co-op and internships, contact [log in to unmask] or 865-974-5323.
