Registration for the March 20 Talking Freight seminar on Case Study on Promoting Public and Private Sector Freight Collaboration is still available.

Date/Time: March 20, 2013 1:00 - 2:30 pm EDT

Registration: http://www.ops.fhwa.dot.gov/freight/fpd/talking_freight/index.htm

Description: In recent years many Departments of Transportation at all geographic levels have placed increased emphasis on addressing freight transportation, due to the general growth in freight movements across all modes and the desire to better understand how freight movements impact, both positively and negatively, the communities where those movements take place. In order to be done effectively, freight transportation planning efforts need to be coordinated among various government agencies at the federal, state, and regional levels and between public sector governments and private sector freight carriers and shippers. The Twin Cities Metropolitan Council, the MPO representing the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area, has worked closely with the Minnesota DOT, regional public sector organizations, and private sector companies to address freight transportation needs in Minnesota's largest metropolitan area. Additionally, the U.S. DOT’s Volpe Center provided assistance in promoting collaboration between the groups involved. The Twin Cities MPO’s freight planning efforts can serve as a case study for freight collaboration efforts in other metropolitan areas around the U.S.

Presenters:

・ Bill Gardner, Minnesota Department of Transportation

・ Alisa Fine, U.S. Research and Innovative Technology Administration, U.S. DOT Volpe Center

・ Connie Kozlak, Twin Cities Metropolitan Council (aka the Twin Cities MPO)

・ Dave Damm-Luhr, U.S. Research and Innovative Technology Administration, U.S. DOT Volpe Center

An article at http://www.volpe.dot.gov/noteworthy/2012/ckefm.html further describes Minnesota’s efforts and includes links to four reports on freight collaboration in the Twin Cities region:

1.       Freight Performance Management Framework for the Twin Cities Region;

2.       Report on the Freight Peer to Peer Exchange in St. Paul;

3. Freight Peer Best Practices Report; and

4. Story of Freight in the Twin Cities.
