As summer and fall registration approaches, I’d like to share the following upcoming course information with you for planning purposes:

Summer 2013:

(Full summer session) EDPY559: Introduction to qualitative research (Yamagata-Lynch – [log in to unmask])

Fundamentals of qualitative methods. Overview of various qualitative approaches, data collection and analysis methods. Focus on skill development for data collection through interviews, observation, and document analysis, as well as the importance of reflexivity as a qualitative researcher.

(First session) EDAM 617: Case study methods in educational research (Anfara – [log in to unmask])

Methods, techniques and strategies consistent with case study approaches to inquiry in educational and related settings.

(Second session) EDPY604: Digital tools for qualitative research (Paulus – [log in to unmask])

This hands-on, skills-based course will give students experiences using a variety of technologies for conducting qualitative research. The course will highlight how new technologies are changing the essence of what it means to engage in qualitative inquiry. Digital tools that support reviewing the literature, engaging in researcher reflexivity, collaborating, managing projects, collecting data, transcribing data, analyzing data and representing findings will be explored.

(Second session) EP633: Discursive psychology (Paulus – [log in to unmask])

*EP633 is a recommended but not required pre-requisite for EP631: Discourse Analysis.

You’ve heard of cognitive psychology, social psychology, educational psychology and positive psychology – join this doctoral seminar to learn about discursivepsychology – a theory of “language as action” that explores how psychological constructs (e.g. emotions, cognition, attitudes, motivation) are made visible, and are analyzable, in everyday talk. This seminar provides the theoretical foundation for using discourse analysis methods for investigating learning environments.

Fall 2013:

EDPY559: Introduction to qualitative research in education (Ziegler – [log in to unmask])

Fundamentals of qualitative methods. Overview of various qualitative approaches, data collection and analysis methods. Focus on skill development for data collection through interviews, observation, and document analysis, as well as the importance of reflexivity as a qualitative researcher.

EDPY631: Discourse analysis of educational environments (Paulus – [log in to unmask])

Provides an introduction to the broad area of discourse analysis as an approach for understanding naturally occurring language use, particularly in the context of teaching and learning.

Spring 2014:

EDPY 659: Advanced qualitative research in education (Paulus – [log in to unmask])

Implementing and writing qualitative studies in educational settings. Qualitative data collection, analysis, and report writing.

CFS650: Advanced qualitative research methods in human sciences (Blanton – [log in to unmask])

Methods of qualitative research are explored including narrative, phenomenological, ethnographic, grounded theory, and case study approaches. Emphasis on utilizing and analyzing data from in-depth interviews. Development of a proposed study and pilot data collection and analyses are required.

CCI 660: International Ethnographic Fieldwork (Topics in Communication and Information) (Pettigrew – [log in to unmask])

The course will overview theory and methods involved in conducting ethnography and will culminate in an international, service learning field experience. Issues related to intercultural participant-observation, informal and formal interviewing and ethnographic fieldnotes will be not only discussed but also experienced during a 7-14 day trip to Masaya, Nicaragua over spring break 2014. Partnership with an NGO in Masaya will provide safe and comfortable housing as well as broker entrée into indigenous Nicaraguan organizations. English-only speakers are welcome to participate.
