________________________________

OIT sponsors GTA@OIT Grants to encourage UTK Graduate Teaching Associates and Assistants (GTAs) to incorporate technology into their teaching. GTAs, with sole responsibility for teaching a course, are paired with OIT instructional design staff to accomplish their goals for technology use.

In addition to mentoring, grant recipients receive a monetary incentive of $1,000 to purchase software, attend a professional conference, prepare a professional presentation or publication about integrating technology into a course, or use as a stipend.

GTA@OIT<https://oit.utk.edu/instructional/development/gta/> Spring 2013 grant proposals are due Friday, February 15 by 5pm. For more information, contact Christina Goode at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> or 974-6470.

________________________________

OIT has streamlined the process for faculty to enroll their classes in any self-paced, online Microsoft IT Academy course. Now faculty can easily register their academic classes to take IT Academy courses. These courses provide multiple levels of learning, from introductory to advanced, to sharpen the skills of the participants on all Microsoft products. Consequently it is easy to ensure students step through the appropriate level and acquire the skills needed for their academic classes. Faculty can easily check student participation and completion of the courses. If you are interested, click to enroll your students in IT Academy<https://oit.utk.edu/Training/online-training>.

Monthly IT Community of Practice: Using Presentation Technology in a Lecture

IT Community of Practice (IT CoP) is a monthly lunchtime meeting where faculty and OIT get together for an informal conversation about trends and issues in instructional technology.

The January meeting focused on OIT’s faculty training options. The discussion centered on teaching tools to develop and deliver online content.

This month, join other faculty and OIT in the conversation about tips and tricks for using Smart Technology. Will Schleter, the OIT Faculty Fellow, will demonstrate his use of Smartboard and Sympodium. The OIT staff member Michael Burke will answer your questions. The meeting will be held Thursday February 28, 11:30-12:30 in the Practice Presentation Room at the Commons of the Hodges Library. Bring your lunch and join the discussion. OIT will provide coffee and something sweet! We are looking forward to seeing you there!

________________________________

When designing a research study that compares groups of human subjects, an important step to consider is assigning the subjects to the various experimental conditions at random. If subjects are allowed to choose which treatment group they prefer, you will be unable to separate the effect of your treatment from the effect of self-assignment. For example, when testing a new teaching method, harder working students might be attracted by a new, more rigorous teaching approach. As a result, you would then not know if higher grades were due to the treatment or the possibility that it attracted better students. OIT’s Research Support group can help you design studies, determine sample sizes, help you choose the most efficient way to collect and analyze data, and even help write up the results. For free assistance, contact the OIT Help Desk at 974-9900 or stop by our walk-in area in Greve 517 most afternoons. View our walk in support schedule.<http://oit.utk.edu/research>
