Featured co-op student: Brandon Irby

Our student this week is, Brandon Irby, pictured at right, an aerospace engineering major, who accepted a co-op at Malibu Boats of Tennessee located in Loudon, Tennessee.

Irby describes what department he worked in and what his main responsibilities were.

"I worked in the process engineering department during this coop assignment," he said. "My project was to make work instructions for the parts that get installed in each boat. Malibu uses an assembly line to build their product. At each station we took time studies and documented how each part is installed. This documentation is critical to increasing quality and efficiency of making a great product because the process engineering team is able to balance out work stations and increase the number of boats produced each day."

The most valuable benefit Irby received during his co-op assignment was experience.

"It is much different in the work field than in schoo," said Irbyl. "Now that I have experience, other companies will notice that I was able to adapt to a new work environment and that I can jump right into engineering without anyone having to babysit me on the first few projects I do."

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work–In Their Own Words.”
