Institute of Industrial Engineers Conference

ISE faculty members recognized by Institute of Industrial Engineers

Faculty in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) recently received honors from the Institute of Industrial Engineering (IIE).

Dr. Rupy Sawhney, ISE professor and department head, was elected to the board of directors for the Lean Division of the IIE.

Sawhney and team also earned the IIE Lean Teaching Award for the lean engineering program that they developed. The team includes ISE professors Robert Keyser and Joseph Stainback and Lean Enterprise Summer Program director Enrique Macias de Anda. The award will be presented at an honors banquet during the IIE Annual Conference in Puerto Rico on Monday, May 20.

Dr. Xiaoyan Zhu will receive the IIE Best Paper Prize in Quality and Reliability Engineering during the honors banquet. Zhu is an assistant professor in ISE and associate director of the Reliability and Maintainability Engineering (RME) program.

Dr. Kan Huang

CEE research associate earns science award

Dr. Kan Huang received China's 2012 Natural Science Award in January 2013 from Premier Wen Jiabao for his participation in a project studying ways to improve air quality in Chinese cities. Huang is a post-doctoral research associate under Dr. Joshua Fu, associate professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The awarded project, titled "Air Pollution and Aerosol in China: Formation Mechanism and the Impact on Air Quality," improved the understanding of the way that severe air pollution, especially from aerosol sources (particulate matter), forms in China and has implications for improving the air quality of Chinese cities in the future.

Candidates for ISE Department Head will present seminars

Candidates for professor and head of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Tennessee will visit campus over the next several weeks. Gregory Parnell visited campus on February 18 and Heather Nachtmann visited February 20. The search committee invites you to attend the remaining seminar presentations and open forums for the final candidates in 414E Ferris Hall. Each seminar will begin at 1:15 p.m. and will be followed by an open forum starting at 2:00 p.m.

Dr. Ali Dhinojwala will give seminar on bio-inspired materials

Dr. Ali Dhinojwala, at right, Morton Professor and Department Chair of Polymer Science, University of Akron, will give a seminar at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, February 26, in Room 612 of the Dougherty Engineering Building. His topic is "Bio-Inspired Adhesives and Coatings." The talk is presented by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Dr. Xian-Ming Bai to speak on defect evolution

Dr. Xian-Ming (David) Bai, at right, will speak on "Multi-Time Scale Modeling of Defect Evolution in Materials under Extreme Environment"at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 28, in Room 308 of the Pasqua Nuclear Engineering Building.

Bai is a staff scientist at Idaho National Laboratory. The talk is presented by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

The National Society of Black Engineers will host a series of events for the annual Spring NSBE Week from Monday, February 25, to Friday, March 1. Events include:

College of Engineering faculty and students receive free admission for MARCON 2013, the seventeenth annual Maintenance and Reliability Conference, February 25-28, in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the Knoxville Marriott Hotel.

This one-of-a-kind conference is a forum for practitioners, specialists, educators, students, and even the uninitiated to learn and exchange information in the area of reliability and maintenance engineering and management, from new and emerging technologies to proven methods and techniques. Information sessions planned for Whitaker International Scholarship Program

The Office of National Scholarships and Fellowships (ONSF) at UT invites students to attend a special presentation on the Whitaker International Grants Program by Sabeen Altaf, senior program officer from the Whitaker Scholarship program and Institute of International Education (IIE-Fulbright).

Altaf will present information sessions 10:00-11:15 a.m. and noon-1:15 p.m. Friday, March 8, in Room 213 of Hodges Library.

The Whitaker International Program sends emerging leaders in US biomedical engineering (or bioengineering) overseas to undertake a self-designed project that will enhance their careers within the field. The goal of the program is to assist the development of professional leaders who are not only superb scientists, but who also will advance the profession through an international outlook. Along with supporting grant projects in an academic setting, the Whitaker International Program encourages grantees to engage in policy work and propose projects in an industry setting. Grants are available for: undergraduates, graduates, post-docs, faculty, and professionals.

All UT students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

Trips offered for engineering students

Two trips are planned for spring and summer of 2013 to offer engineering students international experiences.

"Engineering in Madrid" is scheduled for May 11-18. It includes homestay accommodations with two meals per day; a guest engineering lecture; museum visits; cultural activities; a day-trip to Segovia; and a tour of an aerospace organization. Approximate cost is $1,800 plus air fare.

"Alternative Summer Break in Peru," based in Lima, is scheduled for August 10-17. It includes dormitory accommodations with three meals per day; an engineering-related service project in the mornings; cultural activities in the afternoon, including a Peru city tour. Approximate cost is $1,500 plus air fare.

Volunteers sought for Science Saturdays program

Volunteers are sought for the "Science Saturdays" program at Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU). The program is looking for science students from all fields who are passionate about their own scientific education as well as sharing that interest with junior-high and high-school students. CISML launches GRA program for MS students

The Center for Intelligent Systems and Machine Learning (CISML) has launched a new program titled Graduate Research Assistantship for Master Students (GRAMS). GRAMS is an assistantship program funded by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the Science Alliance (a UT Center of Excellence). The program is restricted to master students who are US citizens and who are currently enrolled in full time graduate study at the University of Tennessee.

Summer research internships available for undergrads

Up to seventy internships at $2,000 each will be awarded to support students who will work on a research or creative project with a UT Knoxville faculty mentor during the summer of 2013. The UT Knoxville Office of Research administers this internship program.

Schneider Electric hosts international competition

Schneider Electric is hosting "Go Green in the City," an international case competition for students interested in careers in green and renewable energy. The University of Tennessee is one of Schneider's ten target campuses for the competition, which culminates in Paris.

Teams of two students (business or engineering majors with at least one female member) will come up with a creative idea for how to make their city more "green" through intelligent energy management. The top 100 teams will be offered internships with Schneider Electric and the top twenty-five will be flown to Paris to compete against students from seven other countries. The winning team will be flown all over the world to visit Schneider Electric plants and will be offered full-time positions with Schneider.

The deadline to pre-register is March 3, 2013. Students must pre-register with an idea in order to participate, but do not need to have the entire case put together until April 28, 2013. Read more >>

iSchool Inclusion Institute is accepting applications

The iSchool Inclusion Institute (i3), an undergraduate research and leadership development program that prepares students from underrepresented populations for graduate study and careers in the information sciences, is currently accepting applications. The institute is held each year in June at the University of Pittsburgh and includes two summer institutes and a year-long team research project. For more information >>

All application materials must be submitted by March 8, 2013. To apply to i3, students must submit an online application with essay questions, two letters of recommendation, and official undergraduate transcripts. i3 is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and is hosted by the University of Pittsburgh's School of Information Sciences.

Join us for the Engineering Expo for co-op and Internships. More than forty employers will be on campus that day seeking engineering students for co-op and internship positions for the Summer and Fall 2013 work terms. This is also a great time to explore opportunities that may exist for you in future years. The event will take place in the UC ballroom on the second floor from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Thursday, February 28. The Engineering Expo is open to all engineering students, but students must be registered with the Engineering Professional Practice office in order to attend.

Featured co-op student: Adelle Poole

Our student this week is, Adelle Poole, pictured at right, an industrial engineering major, who accepted a co-op at Eastman Chemical Company located in Kingsport, Tennessee.

Poole describes the department she worked in and what her main responsibilities were.

"During my third supply chain co-op assignment with Eastman Chemical Company, my time was split between two workgroups," said Poole. "The first was the Packaging and Labeling group within Indirect Procurement, and the other was the Process Improvement group within Global Logistics."

For the Packaging and Labeling group, Poole managed the inventory of several packaging materials used to package one of Eastman Chemical's highly profitable products, filter tow.

"The materials I managed included cardboard, corrugated, plastic wrap and trays," said Poole. "This function required me to monitor current inventories, existing purchase orders, material consumption, and supplier lead time in SAP and decide when to order more."

For the Logistics Process Improvement group, Poole had two major projects.

"The first was a cost analysis project to determine if it was more beneficial for one of Eastman's internal businesses organizations to store their material in railcars or in silo," she said. "My second project for Logistics Process Improvement was Customer Segmentation for Logistics."

The most valuable benefit Poole received during her co-op assignment was exposure to supply chain in a company culture that she really appreciates.

"I know now that this is the field I want to enter when I graduate," said Poole. "I know which functions within supply chain appeal to me more than others and how the functions are related to each other. I have even had exposure to the top source of supply chain and logistics professional education, APICS. What makes all this so valuable is that I know this was all possible because the people of Eastman Chemical Company invested in my future, and I could not be more grateful to them."

Sixth Annual College of Engineering Dining Etiquette Dinner and Workshop for Engineers

The Career Services Office at UT Knoxville invites senior and junior level engineering students to the Sixth Annual Dining Etiquette Dinner and Workshop for Engineers 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, in the Hermitage Room, on the third floor of the University Center.

The evening includes an informal networking session with corporate sponsors at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:00 p.m. Corporate sponsors for the dinner are ConAgra Foods, DENSO Manufacturing, Eastman Chemical Company, and International Paper. The student organization co-sponsor is Tau Beta Pi.

Career Services' own dining and business etiquette trainer Mary Mahoney will lead the discussion on appropriate mealtime etiquette for professional settings. Business casual dress is required for this event.

A $5 deposit is required to attend this event and must be brought to the Career Services Office at 100 Dunford Hall prior to February 26. The deposit will be returned to you at the event for attending. You will not be registered for the event until you have paid your deposit.
