ExxonMobil seeks funding proposals from COE student organization

ExxonMobil seeks proposals from engineering student organizations for grant funds later in the spring semester. Requests should be in the range of $250-$750 per idea, but if there are great ideas that are more expensive, please include in the proposal. Proposals should be submitted to April Gonzalez in Career Services via e-mail at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> by Friday, February 15, to be considered.

Criteria to allocate the funds will be:
  * The impact or benefit the funds provide
  * Number of students benefitting from the proposed idea
  * Visibility to other students of the benefit that ExxonMobil is providing

Proposals should clearly describe the funding needed overall, the funding being requested of ExxonMobil, how the funds will be used, and how it relates to each of the above criterion. The program asks that there only be one request per student organization, and if multiple organizations are working on the same project, groups should apply jointly. Proposals should be one page or less.

Student organizations should also include information on where to send the check, and also provide a means to verify that address is tied to the organization (for example, the address is listed on the organization's public website).

Featured co-op student: Anna Ness

[Anna Ness]Our student this week is, Anna Ness, pictured at right, a biosystem engineering major, who accepted a co-op at Duke Energy Corporation located in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Anna describes what department she worked in and what her main responsibilities were:

"I worked in the Carolinas West Field Support group within the Environmental Services division of Duke Energy," said Ness. "In short, Environmental Services is the organization responsible for ensuring Duke Energy is addressing all of its environmental obligations and commitments. Every power plant is subject to strict federal, local, and state guidelines. We work closely with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and North Carolina Department of Natural Resources (NC DENR)."

Although it was only her first rotation with Duke Energy, Ness was given responsibilities on a wide variety of projects.

"During my work assignment, I analyzed groundwater monitoring data, performed chemical inventory inspections and updated the system database, wrote Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures plans, and completed other tasks relating to regulatory documents and reports," said Ness. "I also designed and managed two SharePoint websites. In association with these projects, I had the opportunity to visit seven Duke Energy power stations across the Carolinas. Usually, I spent about three days per week in my office in downtown Charlotte and two days in the field."

The co-op assignment helped Ness see the opportunities open to her as an engineer.

"Before I began working for Duke Energy, I was skeptical about what I wanted to do with my engineering degree and what opportunities were available," she said. "Even though I have only worked with Duke for a few months, I really like the company culture and I find power generation fascinating. I learned that there's more to engineering than knowing how to perform tedious mathematical calculations. Truly talented engineers can communicate effectively, work with others, and understand highly technical material enough to explain it in simple terms. I am looking forward to my future rotations, and possibly many more years with the Duke Energy."

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu<http://www.coop.utk.edu>, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work–In Their Own Words.”
