Library Director – Crandall Public Library (Glens Falls, NY)

Become a vital part of providing Crandall Public Library District residents with free access to the world of ideas, information in varied formats and the creative experience of an open and nonjudgmental environment.  In achieving this mission, the Library Board of Trustees seeks a visionary new leader—skilled in directing a diverse team of talented professionals in interpreting and implementing Board policy—and capable of setting and meeting goals and achieving high standards.  Crandall Public Library District is governed by a 15-member elected Board of Trustees and serves the 53,621 residents of the Towns of Queensbury and Moreau and the City of Glens Falls. Operating continuously since 1893, it is a strong regional example of intergovernmental cooperation.  It is also the Central Reference Library of the Southern Adirondack Library System providing service to the residents of Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Hamilton counties. Housed in a stunningly renovated (2008), LEED certified Main Library in downtown Glens Falls, the staff (34.2 FTEs) works within a $4.2 million budget to provide quality services and programs to its communities. The Library loans more than 813,000 items annually and was visited 461,000 times in 2011. With a solid financial base, a committed Library Board of Trustees, collaborative programs and services such as early literacy and the unique Folklife Center, cutting-edge technology and an active and engaged Friends organization—all of the pieces are in place to achieve even greater levels of future excellence.

Situated in the Hudson River Valley, the Crandall Public Library District borders Warren and Saratoga counties in the Adirondack Foothills. The City and environs offer a variety of cultural, educational, social and recreational amenities—museums, galleries, festivals, theater, outdoor sports and activities, concerts and good schools (including SUNY Adirondack). Charming architecture and friendly people make the area a great place to play, work and live.  Additional information on the Library and the area can be found at Crandall Links.

Responsibilities: The Library Director is the chief administrator and is responsible for carrying out policy as determined by the Library Board of Trustees and for developing the long-term plans and directions of the Library; planning and directing the overall operations and management of the Library; providing effective team development and leadership to the staff; working collaboratively with civic organizations and community agencies; working effectively with elected officials at the state and county level; and interacting with the media and the community to project a positive image of the Library.  See Library Director for the complete job description, illustrative work activities and required knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics.

Qualifications: Minimum qualifications are a Master’s Degree in Librarianship from an ALA accredited library school or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable education practices; and five or more years of satisfactory professional library experience, two or more years of which must have been in an administrative capacity. The position also requires eligibility for a NYS public librarian’s professional certificate at the time of application and possession of the certificate at the time of appointment. Prior success as a library director reporting to a policy making board is also highly desirable.  Appointment will be made provisionally pending Civil Service examination to be held at a later date.

1. [TLA] Re: Library Director-Rye Free Reading Room (NY) position open

1. [TLA] Re: Library Director-Rye Free Reading Room (NY) position open

LIBRARY DIRECTOR - RYE (NY) FREE READING ROOM

Rye Free Reading Room’s Board of Trustees seeks a creative and energetic new leader to promote library services and continue the Library’s commitment to quality programming and services for the Rye community. The Director will work closely with the 18-member Board of Directors, a 45-member Auxiliary Board, staff and local stakeholders to develop and articulate its vision for library service, design and implement strategic initiatives, and administer the service program, facility and space planning, and fundraising and resource development. As an association library, the Rye Free Reading Room is funded by the City of Rye and private donations, with the Board actively investigating options for sustainable funding.  The successful candidate will focus on accomplishing the following: fostering a strong and collaborative relationship with city government—city council and city manager—to  achieve a higher degree of funding security; working closely with other local non-profit organizations and agencies to enhance the breadth and delivery of library services; reaching out to the community at large to keep them informed of the library's wide range of resources, programs and funding needs; and working to optimize and implement the new three-year strategic plan. See RFFR Director job description for the complete job description.

Rye Free Reading Room has a collection of 98,887 items housed in the main library and a small branch and circulates over 222,654 items annually. With a staff of 13.92 FTEs and a budget of $1.5 million, the library provides exceptional customer service and its programs are consistently among the most heavily attended in Westchester County—attendance last year pushed over 34,356 with best-selling authors and a wide-selection of children’s programs.  A recent expansion of the landmark building on Rye’s Village Green and ongoing capital projects—including repurposing the historic 2nd floor, adding a Teen Center and meeting room—help  ensure the facilities are well-positioned for continued growth.

Rye, a suburban community in Westchester County, is home to 15,000 residents.  Located on Long Island Sound, Rye enjoys a strong sense of community, with close proximity to New York City and regional attractions in the Tri-State area.  For additional information on the Library, the City and the area see Rye Free Reading Room links.

Minimum qualifications include an MLS from an ALA accredited institution and at least five years of progressively responsible experience, including at least two years management experience in a public library.  The successful candidate must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated leadership ability and the ability to work collaboratively with Board, staff, elected officials and community groups. In addition, the successful candidate must be able to articulate a vision of library services in the 21st century. Successful experience with fundraising, building maintenance, working in a union environment and reporting to policy board are highly desirable.

Compensation: The starting salary range is $92,000-$108,000 (dependent on experience and qualifications) plus benefits.

For further information, contact Bradbury Associates/Gossage Sager Associates via email or phone. Apply via email with a meaningful cover letter and your resume as Word or pdf attachments to Dan Bradbury or Jobeth Bradbury.

This position closes February 17, 2013.
