Earl*, M.L.I.S. *I* Director *I* Brentwood Library *I **A Center for Fine Arts* *I *8109 Concord Rd *I *Brentwood, TN 37027 *I* 1.615.371.0090 ext 8010 *I* www.brentwood-tn.org/library *Title: Librarian I – Technical Services* * * *Salary: $17.78 hourly rate* *Job Description:* Professional position in the Technical Services Department of the Brentwood Public Library responsible for cataloging library materials and assisting in ensuring the accuracy of the Library’s access catalog and assists or leads technical and other special projects, as assigned * * *Essential Duties and Responsibilities:* Catalogs print and non-print materials using OCLC Connexion Browser, Polaris, and the Dewey decimal classification system, including original cataloging Maintains knowledge of current trends in professional cataloging rules and standards including appropriate treatments for series or multipart items Provides assistance to other catalogers in resolving difficult questions and cataloging problems Searches OCLC for MARC records, locates and matches records to items needing cataloging, and edits records to conform to locally established standards Researches new techniques and technologies for cataloging, shares findings with colleagues, and makes recommendations for implementation in department processes as appropriate Participates in processing materials as needed Performs basic computer maintenance tasks; performs data entry functions for on-line catalog maintenance. Works with IT staff regarding ILS maintenance and function Serves on various library committees and provides recommendations for the improvement and streamlining of library services Attends professional development classes, conferences, meetings and trainings Assists or leads technical and other special projects, as assigned Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of the Brentwood Library’s collection and patron population Working knowledge of public library practices and procedures Knowledge of the purpose of cataloging and familiarity with MARC records and the Dewey Decimal Classification system, authority and subject heading systems, and the use of bibliographic utilities. Knowledge of cataloging standards, database management, and use of technology in a technical services library environment Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs Ability to understand the change process and how it will impact daily activities Ability to change strategies/behaviors in response to changing priorities and conditions Ability to maintain a conductive atmosphere for job productivity and satisfaction where team goals are aligned to meet library objectives Ability to effectively direct and follow-up the work of others Must demonstrate strong organizational, planning, and promotional skills Must possess the ability to interact effectively with colleagues, and other diverse groups and individuals in a friendly manner *Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:* Master's Degree in Library Science ALA accredited required, with course work in cataloging and classification in the Dewey and Library of Congress systems, and with library/technical services experience (or related) to preferably include supervisory knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
