Good News

--- Creators of a screen printing company for campus organizations and a designer of leisure hammocks are the latest recipients of a $20,000 grant from the UT Boyd Venture Fund. The two student ventures, InHouse GFX and Adams Innovation LLC, are the fall 2012 winners of the Boyd Venture Fund. They will share the money, which will allow them to grow their businesses.

--- The Boss Dance Company spring showcase, presented by the UT Dance Society, is set for Jan. 17-19 at Clarence Brown Theatre. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for general admission. The show consists of various dances ranging in styles including hip hop, salsa, jazz, tap, modern, ballet and contemporary. --- UT's English Language Institute (ELI) is seeking volunteers from the campus and community to serve in its Spring 2013 Conversation Partners Program. Conversation Partners meet on a weekly basis with ELI international students to help them practice English conversation. Questions? E-mail [log in to unmask]

--- Looking for a great way to volunteer on campus? Be a mentor for the FUTURE Program at UT. The FUTURE Program is a post-secondary education program for students ages 18-29 with intellectual disabilities who have completed high school. Through the program, students will be able to continue their education beyond high school and therefore increase employment opportunities as well as independence. Questions? --- Ready to be a leader? First-Year Studies is looking for peer mentors to assist faculty and staff with FYS 101 next fall. Earn credit hours while gaining valuable leadership experience. --- The Office of Research offers online training in the following areas of compliance: IRB/Human Subjects Research, Responsible Conduct of Research, Conflicts of Interest, and Export Control. Please note that IRB/Human Subjects Research training is mandatory for all students who will be submitting an IRB protocol at UT. --- This is the season to apply for dozens of undergraduate research opportunities at UT and elsewhere. Visit www.research.utk.edu/undergrad for more information and "like" the Facebook page at UT Knoxville Undergraduate Research to receive notifications of opportunities as they are announced.

--- Attention, artists: The library wants to display your work. The Student Art in the Library contest awards a first prize of $300, second prize of $150, and third prize of $75. Submission deadline for the Spring 2013 contest is Feb. 10. The library is looking for two-dimensional works to be displayed in 135 Hodges Library throughout the spring semester. The contest is open to all currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students, in any discipline. More info at library.utk.edu/artinlibrary.

--- The UT Research Foundation (UTRF) is now taking applications from graduate students for its internship program. Interns learn about the commercialization process and work alongside UTRF's licensing professionals. The deadline to apply is Feb. 15. Training for the year-long internship begins in May. Questions? --- As classes resume this spring, you will see some big changes in the lighting in four campus buildings: the Jane and David Bailey Education Complex; the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Building (HPER); the Student Services Building; and the Communications Building. Old fixtures are being replaced with energy-efficient lights, manual switches are being replaced with on-off sensors, and other upgrades are being done.

--- Calling all coaches! Make a difference in a girl's life by being a coach for Girls on the Run for the spring semester. Girls on the Run is a nonprofit program for girls 3rd through 8th grade with a mission to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.
